yeah Iknow, no one has a spare one? but I'll try again anyway.a 1- engine number prefer march or april 54. I've got a oval engine not running (as far as I know) probably 57, that I can swap if you like.
I've got a complete running 36hp engine that was in my '54.
I've also got the matching number case from my '54.
I'm in Adelaide.

If you are after an engine for a april '54 Beetle the engine number you need will be before 778 134, this one was made on the 30 April 1954.
758 796 was made on the 30 March 1954.
36hp engines didn't have the 1 in front of the number till March '55.

thanks to everyone for thier replies so far...
menangler, are you sure about numbers? or is this for split window 50 - 52?.
is there a reference book or something that I need to look at? or can you email me the page from your book, I know it's a hassle.......
Beetle engines had the "1-" designation in front of them until the model change in August 1955. I would have to have a dig around in my books to see when this began, but probably right from the start, certainly for a few years at least. I have had several late '53 and early and late '54 beetles with their correct engines which all had the 1- in front - it designated that it was a type 1 car. Kombis had a "2-" designation in front of the engine number for type 2.
The numbers Menangler quotes as last numbers for March and April '54 are correct, but they will definitely also have the 1- in front of those.

thanks angus, karmen, and everyone one else. it gets confusing.........
I'll catch up again soon angus and pick up that trim, & to see if your ghia is painted yet...
anyway, who is "brisbane" has a correct number march or april engine with all the right bits still attached?
If the motor is original it will most likely have wire clips holding on the
dizzy cap, instead of the flat tin ones.
That would be a good initial check for those people who have engines
sitting around and dont know the number system. Also humpy top oil cooler.
Have some free 36hp parts, for you but prob not the ones you want.

thanks dangerous, the engine in my 54 has a 58 engine number but I've got the wire clip dizzy, humpy oil filler, big nut generator etc? I'd say these were all transferred over to this engine when it probably died. even the carby is correct 54. maybe I should just reco the one I've got and who cares about the engine number? it looks the same.....
what do you think....
depends how dedicated u are ...most of us are vw nuts.......
