Hi, can anyone tell me if it is possible to insure a 1974 VW Kombi camper in this country? I have tried my own bank (ANZ), who wont even look at a car that old. Ive heard people talking about Shannons, so i have just got off the phone with them. They will not insure me either because they dont do campers. Since i have been living in Australia I've seen tons of VW campers on the road. Are they all not insured? Somebody..........anybody.........?

dont know im 34 and i can insure my type 3 1969 no probs at all with nrma. $370 full
I am pretty sure Shannons will insure it. Just insure it as a modified Kombi. Full comprehensive insurance on our 75 bus is $330. Member of a VW club too.
The guy was very certain that they would not cover it. I even asked him repeatedly if he was sure and he was. If I was to insure it as a modified and then had an accident and they found out it was a camper they probably wouldnt pay out.

Done! - Thanks bitemeoz.
I gave NRMA a call and you wouldnt believe it. The guy who picked up my call was a young guy named Alex in Sydney. He himself has a 1974 Kombi panelvan. What are the chances? His one sounds mint - kept in a shed unused for 10 yrs and given to him by his Pop - no rust. Anyway they covered the vehicle for the grand sum of $234.76c including the windscreen extension.
We talked for quite a while about Kombis and I referred him to this website - he hadnt heard about it. So after all of that I got 2 good deeds done in one phone call.:thumb

I'm surprised Shannons wouldn't do it...
Pay your debts, CxxT
Hi
I am surprised Shannons didn't do it, they have got a good reputation and turn up at all of the VW shows
They are sponsors of the 'Kombi Club', I would be interested to find out who you spoke to.
Pleased you have got sorted
Yeah I know, thats why I gave Shannons a call in the first place. I'm think the guys name was Ian. They need to sort out that whole camper thing - even if its just for classic campers.
I am pretty stoked with the call to NRMA though.

I don't know what the guy at Shannons was playing at! I have my 73 camper insured through them and have done so for the fast three years. I just sent the pho's up by Email and the job was done.
Commited dubber..... My wife thinks I ought to be commited!
Anyone here on the phone to NRMA asking for Alex, and trying to score a panel? :P
My '75 camper is insured with NRMA, it's cheap even for fully comp, they paid out no trouble when I had an accident. Very good service.
Shannons are good for older cars, NRMA wouldn't touch my '59 bug but Shannons were happy to insure it, also very cheap!

Apparently quite good.
Futue te ipsum!!!
I had the same problem insuring my Kombi with Shannons... they were adamant that they dont do campers so when i converted it over to a camper fitout i had to change companies.
I am now with RACV but its a shame that Shannons dont recognise kombi campers.... the irony is that we used to be good friends with the late Bob Shannon so we even had our new Saab insured with the company, but they wont do my '77 van?!?! Since he's been gone the company seems to be sliding backwards.
RACV did me a good deal though... im still only Rating 2 cos im 22 but they did me $380 a year. Im happy now my lil van is protected from morons 🙂
thats odd cause i have just gone thru the same thing.
when i went to get my green slip, nrma quoted me $440, now i am 48 and have never ever had an accident. so i went to shannons as i thought $440 for a gold member was a bit rich - i did shannons on line, went thru all the questions including the fact it was a camper and got a quote for $167. Unfortunately i didn't read the small print that they dont do greenslips which is what i was after so i eventually went thru Allianz for $290 (Qbe was $380). i did e mail shannons to ask if they did greenslips but to date , no reply and that was 4 days ago.
i plan to live forever.....so far so good.
