Um, if you have a mate who is a trady, try looking second hand. I got a good 150watt one and it cost me $600 from a pawn shop.

With a bit of a search on the internet I found SIP 170 amp Coppermate for $825. Mate trust me it is a top unit. I have seen it in action and it is good for panel steel with 0.8mm wire and good for 5mm plate also using 0.8mm wire

Personally I only use 0.8mm wire, especially on panel steel, as I find the 0.6mm wire doesnt feed as smoothly, and you don't get as good a penetration. The good welding techniquie is all related to guntip to workpiece distance, wire speed, amperage and clenliness of metal.

I have the CIGweld transmig 160, which was about $900 not including corgon gas. I typically use 0.6mm wire with sheet metal which I find gives me the right amount of heat to get good penetration but not too much heat to blow through really easily. Haven't had a problem with the unit, have had it for about a year, gone through one E size bottle of gas.

I have worked as a mig repair tech and any of the above are very good. Anything not made in china or cheap arse Italian stuff. Dont even contemplate gasless wire, May be o.k for home handyman but once you become competent at welding the machine wont do the jobs you will want to tackle. There is also some issues with the smoke given off by gasless migs so im told.
