Allright just spent the day pulling the engine out of my 74 kombi for the first time ever. and shit i'm proud of myself. even if the father in law (who actually knows thing one about motors) did allot of the hard stuff. even what looks like a crack in the left head wasn't enough to rain on my parade for i have popped my vw cherrie!!. so now i play the waiting game while getting the heads done by my uncle in law the mechanic.
can't wait to try and put this jigsaw puzzle of tinware bolts and wires back into place. got 4 more days and counting to do it in, so what could go wrong!!!:P
thought i should share this momentous occassion with someone. now i feel like a real dubbber.

Nah, stuff that, try 20 days to get one back in... then you find a few bolts weren't put in and those twin kadrons are just that wee bit too big and ...............

I must say I was the same when I took the engine out of my Fastie for the first time a few years ago.
So well done keep going.

I guess we'll find out just how easy it is in a month or so when we pull the 1600 out of the donor bug and bling it up ready for the tinkerbeetle 🙂
The mans done plenty of ordinary cars, but never a VW 🙂

Hmm - I remember the feeling well.

The neighbour helped me remove the Baja engine for the first time. Was very easy with no rear valance.
The insertion was surprisingly just as easy. Having worked on motorbikes for many years I found the transition very easy.

I'm not looking forward to replacing my first transaxle though. looks much heavier and more complicated.

Something insane like 2 minutes Maybe?
its less than that. a team of four and a remove and refit and drive was i think the criteria.

i have a mate who can pull a motor and refit it in half and hour. i remember when we were playing with one of my rides, and we had jsut finished putting it back together. i took it for a test drive, and it wasnt right. it was late in the day and we had to get the motor out and fix the problem, and then refit. i thin that took us about 40 minutes.

See it is possible.

But I have to admit even myself it took about 4 hours on ramps to take my first type 4 motor out of a bus, and it took weeks to rebuild the top end being the fanatic that I am.

It only took me about 40 minutes to get the motor and box out of our bus the second time (15 minutes just to take the driveshafts out), but that was on a hoist, so it made life so much easier.

The Suby motor and gearbox assy took about 1 hr to fit back into the bus, but then I probably farted about for at least 4 hours fittling other stuff like new furl lines, wiring, exhaust etc.

It is all good experience and I encourage people to keep at it and give it a go.

Removal from a beetle with all pipes, cables and wires in place is under a minute and refitting with everything attached is around 1min 20 secs. This is with I think 4 people . Myself it takes me longer to get my bumper assembly off the buggy than it does to get the engine out, and that's not because I'm fast at removing the engine!!

15 minutes is my best, had all tools laid out and ready to go, plan ahead and things become easier.

Gone in 60 seconds.
oh well the news was bad one head is cracked and the other is in real bad shape,The bottom end looks in good shape though. currently tossing up whether to go the reconditioned option or to get 2 brand spanking new ones. I'm leaning towards new heads for the piece of mind. $390 is the price we've been qouted for each. but think i'll do a bit of shopping round. looks like might not be on the road in the next few days but would like to do it right the first time. now time for a bit more degreasing and painting.

Yeah, from running to on the garage floor in 18 mins is my record - mind you it was the third time that day (same engine - leaking flywheel seal)... unfortunatly I gave up after this so the seal still leaks!

Could get it back into the car and running in about 25 mins (working on my own in my garage - so no hoist!)

But if you are just learning, remember, there is no rush - it's better to do it slowly and double check everything as you go, than to rush the job and have to pull it all apart again to fix something that you should have done, but missed because you were rushing!

why is it after a couple of drinks it always seems like the
best time to play around with your car? and it's always by that time
your not alright to drive the damn thing. can you be booked for
tooling over the limit?.:rudolf
