It's not the 'cheapest' you want, but the person who knows how to blast cars. Cheap can often mean someone who blasts too hard, causing warping which will cost you more in the long run.

The Beetle being restored through the magazine cost me approx me $800, and that's certainly not the cheapest by a long way, but there is not one damaged panel. And the panel beater who is taking care of the rust, has seen many straight cars destroyed by inexperienced blasters.

Take care and don't cut corners on paint and panel. It's the first thing people see.

I heard that bead-blasting, using plastic media avoids a lot of heat build up. So chase that option as well.

Good luck. Hope all goes well 🙂

True, but it's still the intensity with which it is applied. I'll give an example.

The inside panels of a Beetle boot area, especially towards the front door pillar, are one area to be careful. An experienced blaster doesn't actually point directly into this area, but rather uses the deflected over spray to gently strip away the paint/rust/etc. Even then, short bursts are only possible. Otherwise, the panel ripples and becomes distorted on both sides. The guards are also very touchy, and good blasters know to only blast the guards after re-bolting them back onto the car. This way you can ensure no distortion to the shape.

Under all that noise and mess, it's really a fine art.

Definitley get an experienced media blaster. I got some EH Holden panels done and they were spot on. Cost me $80 each. Then I got two panels done somewhere else because I was in a different area at the time, and they were ruined at a cost of $50 each to me. The blaster just said "they had heaps of bog, nothing to do with me if they are out of shape, musta been like that already"

I have also had panels heat acid dipped and they came up perfect, but you have to spend a lot of time washing them to remove all traces of acid, or they rust flat out like they are at the beach.

Is bead blasting as opposed to sand blasting any friendlier? Could be worth looking in to... 👍

Along with VWMA and Hellbus, the big difference is going to be how good the guy doing the work is.

Media for sandblasting comes in various flavours and grits, much like your grinding wheels. Carborundum, Aluminium oxide, plastic, walnut shells, etc etc....you name it.

Another option which may have made it to Oz is vapour blasting. Extremely effective and gentle on Aluminium alloys.
