Depends what type of music you're keen to play!
The Boss metal Zone is good for a wide range of music but so is the Boss DS-1 Distortion. the heavy metal pedal is sweet for grungy stuff and obviously a very heavy sound also.
The Boss DS-1 Distortion is great for stuff like Nirvana and maybe even U2 (but use a Delay pedal too for most of Edges stuff!). i use the Ds-1 myself (and would recomend it over the DS-2 Turbo Distortion)
I would also say it depends on your guitar and what pickups it has, as well as the amp you are using - but these things are more important probably if you are gigging and concerned about your tone and sound to the nth degree.
If you are just looking to play around a bit with a few sounds at home, theres a lot of decent multi effect pedals out that somewhat reproduce a decent distortion sound. When I say somewhat, I mean they are not perfect, and most people would not gig with all but the most expensive ones, but something like the Zoom G2 or G3 is pretty fun, and has cool features like a drum machine, that you can play along too. They also have a bunch of other effects like Chorus, Delay, Phaser etc. that are fun to muck around with. they are round the $200 mark. If you were just after the one thing though I'd get a DS-1 (for most styles of music).
i actually sell pedals on eBay, but not for the next month as I'm going overseas! All the best and I hope this helps a bit!
Yeah - thanks
#2 is really just getting into the next step of it. School stage, etc
Am looking at a ebay one in perth at the moment.
1/2 the price of the shop here in Sydney
He has a Squire (Strat - Fender?) and a cheap practice amp.
I will get him to read the replies and make up his mind

Well,
Each effect pedal will cost $80+ new now? (cheaper
2nd hand I guess...).
Why not by a second hand 'modelling' amp like a Roland
Cube 30 - it models the sound of half-a-dozen classic amps
(fender, british combo, marshall, tube screamer etc etc) and has distortion, overdrive, phaser, reverb built in.
Pick one up used for $200?

i was going to say boss... im a metal head, my guitarist used it and he swore by it (back in the metal band days... sigh)
