:P Yeah well back "then" all the goodies that are available now, were'nt available then or we just didnt have the bucks so we improvised....mind U there were some hairy rides had when one did 70k around a right hand corner on a dirt road......the arse end tended to hang on but the front end lost traction and point of direction very quickly..........good for camp fire stories but.🤪

Btw in the pic where a mate is doing the axe thingee...note the rear wheels on the bug.....they are not wide wheels........just reversed and bolted back on after the hubcap clips had been punched out.😏

Hi Squizy.....let U in on a little secret......check out the steering wheels in the other pics as well and U will notice that we used that design of steering wheel a number of times.

What it actually consists of is a heavy duty pram wheel (they dont exist now days) with the centre wire spokes removed ....actually first we removed the solid rubber tyre and the cut out the centre wire spokes.....then we folded up a tappered steel bracket out of 50mm x 5mm flat steel ......with a hole to suit the VW steering column at the other end and then the bracket was welded onto the pram wheel rim, painted, solid rubber tyre refitted and bolted to the shortened vw steering column.

We thought they looked "cool" and more racy than having a small wheel fitted to the VW steering column as the standard VW wheels were to large for easy access and exit from the buggies.
