Does red oxide primer need an undercoat before paint goes on? I had a set of wheels sandblasted years ago and painted them with Oxide. Now I wish to paint them black... also, suggestions as to what would be the most suitable paint (pot belly black, marine enamel, automotive acrylic or $2 Junk Shop aerosols etc) appreciated

Red oxide primer is fine to paint over. Sand it lightly with some 600 grit paper. You would only have to put another layer of primer/filler if you want a super smooth glossy look.

The quickest paint to use on it would be just regular black spraycan paint. One can will do. You can get satin or matt too. $2 aerosols may leave you with a frying mess. Only maybe though. They can be a bit 'watery' too.

The Caterpillar company makes a black exhaust stack paint for earth moving machinery which I have been told is almost bullet proof. I have no experience of it but it is supposed to stay black and good looking of exhaust systems for a long time, so it may be good elsewhere. It's Catepillar part number is 4C-4199

Good ol' Epoxy Enamel's the go, especially with hardener/flex agent. Sticks like shit to an army blanket, and is very hard wearing.
