Right.. i'm starting to get sick of things dieing in this car..

:cry

A few weeks ago my headlight relay died, which made my headlights stuck on high beam...

So i got a working relay out of the wreck and replaced my broken one.

So my headlights were working properly again for a couple of weeks (used them a few times in this period)

Then tonight, went to leave a friends place, turned my headlights on, and they were stuck on highbeam again 🙁

Is there any common cause for VW's eating high beam relays?? The local VW mechanic/parts guy said he can't get these style relays, and what he usually does is wire up an external switch.. but i really don't want to have to do this.

ANYWAY...

Any ideas before i take it to the auto electrician (more bills... yay!)

thinking the "dipper" button is on the column? yes?

is it the type that sends a pulse to the relay to "switch" the relay from lo to hi rather than the style they now use where the arm is either up or down?

if so its possible the actual contacts in the button on the end of your arm is dicky, rather than the relay, it seems strange to have them both go.

my bros slowly got harder to activate till it was not working

not real helpful, i know, but might plant an idea/memory for some one to work with

It the type that sends a signal..

The indicator/high beam switch is brand new.. just put it in a couple of months ago!

The contacts and wiring for that are all good!

This will sound stupid, but my car used to occasionally stick on high beam, and if I fiddled with the fuses, actually the whole fuse assembly (unrelated I know) it would fix it. Happened a couple of times, fixed it both times.

What size headlight bulbs do you have fitted to yoiur car?

From memory, the stock VW headlight relay can only handle up to 55W bulbs - if your bulbs are any bigger then it the current they draw may be damaging the headlight relay ...

Also check that all the wiring connections on (and relating to) the headlight relay are clean and tight - loose connections can cause some strange results.
