second one ... but then you could live with a second hand one off eGay. A titanium powerbook or something ... good for Uni ... you'll be blown away with the new grunt anyway ... ps I bought an old iMac like yours for the in-laws on eGay before Xmas....best $60.00 I've spent in ages...

ps. If your wanting to run something like Final Cut Pro or Photoshop CS in any great way, you're gonna need to get min 512k RAM. Get an external 300gig drive from office works for $300.00, be better option if you're doing Visual Coms, as you be trying to move Phat files from home to Uni, no good having a massive iMac drive at home, and no way of carting big files - unless you like SneakerNet.

Upgrade Ram to 1 gig, makes life so much easier. I can have Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator, Acrobat, Safari and email all open and you lose nothing in time or grunt. I have the latest G5 single processor and 20 inch screen.

The new intel duos are definately the way to go. The G5 is good but duo is more affordable and faster. By the way - nice to hear that there are other Mac users out there that realise that apple makes computers also!

hmmm... im guessing you are going to be using this computer for photoshop and the likes?
well... photoshop doesnt run native on the newer intel core-duo macintoshes, it runs through rosetta; so for photoshop, you arent going to notice any speed difference regardless of which machine you buy.

and a tip from one uni student to another... stuff the desktop, go the laptop.
a laptop for a uni is the smartest purchase you will ever make... you can download your notes/assignments straight away, you never need to wait in the library for a free computer, and you can do your coursework ANYWHERE!!
most uni's support macintosh... if they dont at yours, kick up a stink and they soon will.

whatever you decide to buy, i would at least get 512mb RAM... and if at all possible, max out the RAM. Ive got 1.25GB of RAM on a 1.02GHz G4 iBook and i use photoshop for photography. it runs really well (a little sluggy), even if i have 24 scanned medium format negatives open at the same time.

i would seriously look into investing in a laptop if i were you... its invaluable as a student to have a computer whenever and wherever you need it.
in the beginning, the universe was created.
this made alot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move.

rubbish ... you can get a very good iBook, which will more than do the job on eGay. You will definately regred staying desk-bound over the years. Uni students are poor, but do like the rest, get a parent to cough up with some promise of paying it back one day.

Why don't visual art's students look out the window in the morning - because it gives 'em something to do in the afternoon. (😊)

Just because you're at Uni does not render you automatically jobless, but with the competition out there in design these days - you really need to be shit hot at those apps mentioned, else someone will be in line ahead of you. If work = more grunt, but less booze and schmooze ... then it will pay off later, ... the best way to buy it is to work and get paid...how old fashioned ay ... good luck with the course...and don't be tempted into windoze...they only make PCs to keep morons of Mac ya know....lol.....(joke).

so i ended up getting the first one...my nerdy ass friend told me it would be better so i listened to him
i havent had a chance to test it out with photoshop etc as i havent got the programs on here yet, but she seems to go pretty fast when i was putting all my music on and everything from my old computer. theres like over 200GB on here!!!!!!!!!!!! its crazy, on my other computer there was 12GB to start with and only ever about 3BG left at the one time no matter how much stuff i deleted off it!! and its damn huge, i need to get a comparison shot with them sitting next to each other, its hilarious
survey says : its one damn fine computer :kiss :bounce :thumb :P
