Hey all,

More of a dicussion point than anything else. I am a member of a number of forums, which seem to have a unwritten understanding that when display days are held and pictures taken of vehciles that the number plates get whited or blacked out.

I know personally that I have always done this and would expect the same from others picturing my vehicle. At most shows I have generally placed a set of plates on the car which is the same as my user name that way people car reflect on the vehicle and tie it to the username on the forums (this is for display purposes only). Am I one of the few that think in this way or do others not see a problem with displaying their number plates everywhere?

This is not directed at anyone just a observation of the pictures which have be displayed for general viewing in both the gallery and also the main forums.

Cheers
T

what can people seriously do with knowledge of your number plate?
wats the difference between having them on when driving around the street and at a show?

i think you have the right idea displaying other plates on ur show car if u dont want ur number plates in pics on the net etc as i doubt many people would bother whiting them out when they post pics.

I have posted many pictures of my T4 and of other peoples VWs & I never remove the number plate.

I have never had a person come to me and say "Please don't show my plate".

I don't see what all the fuss is about. What info can anyone get from a pic, that they can't when you are driving on the road?

I will say i dont understand the parinoid idea behind it

What is the difference to drining along the street??

You display you number plate there

No one is advertising the address or phone number of the owner

Not arguing..... just dont understand

If ther is a valid reason i will happily change my mind

I can't say I mind if someone takes a pic of my car and posts it showing the plates. There's no difference between seeing it on here, or seeing it driving about.
I've had someone take a photo of my car while I have been driving, and they were half hanging out their car window, so it's not like we could stop our plates being seen anyway on photos from people we don't even know! :P
If someone was paranoid about it though, I'd gladly blackout their plates on my photos. Easily done! But I've never met anyone that minds them being shown anyway...

I think the best solution would be for people who dont want their plates to be shown to put on novelty plates when their car is on display or put a clearly visible sign up requesting that the plates be blacked out.

Personally I have no problem with my plates being shown.

I have heard an instance where pictures of a hit and run were posted. number plates displayed, and the user explaining they have not rung insurance.
someone strolling thru the site spotted the car, damage, plate
rang there insurance, quoted them to be the ones that were hit, and the car in the pictures on the net that was hit was in the wrong.

i do not know the outcome, but i can see the concern of this happening.
i have also heard of people posting pics of there car, previous pics posted with liscence plates.
a large expensive mod has been done
ie: engine, interior.

car was spotted due to plate, car was pinched.

i personally when doing shots of my car, dont greatly mind. however the cars getting new plates. those pics will be blanked.
all pics of my rice burner have blanked plates, coz i do have some $$$ in it.

cars get nicked all the time i'm sure they dont care about plates, they just follow you home from car show because that's where all the good cars are, it's a lot easier to do this. they look them up on the net on a car club site and then go try to find em.
you know all those car yards, trading post, carsales etc they tell you all you have to have a rego plate no. to be able to sell your car, you ring them up and they tell the address of the car to go and have a look.
the only people that worry me are the boys in blue on side of the road taking pictures of my plates:jesus

car forums. where a lot of peoples good intentions end up taking a good old car off the road forever never ever to see the road again. 🥲

OK I have two reasons why I do not post mine.

1. The car can be targetted by know or unknown sources. Whether that be vandelism or theift. most people whom build cars which take years of blood sweet and tears will be very very passionate about their car. One would almost say over protectant. My car has been targeted before (VB SLE with 308 and a number of dollars spent.) Car got stolen from my garage. (yes garage was locked.) Police did end up catching the person and found out he had people which where able to obtain the address of the vehicle so that the vehicles could be found. Secondly Police do frequent forums and have been known to target vehicles (found this out the hard way)

2. Indentity theift. This has happened to a mate of mine where a person has listed his car as theirs for a loan application and then disappeared. the car then was to be repossessed and thus his car was taken. This took 3 years of battling for the crime to be overturned. it still did not help that his car was sold out from under him to recover the debt to the finance company.

I just perfer not having my plates shown. If taken on the road then the chances that the car ends up on the web are limited. I have had my Galant pictured many times by passing people but they have not ended up on the web. more often than not I try and get these peopel to give me a copy as well as I tend not to photo my own vehicles too much.

Might be strange to you but hey I do like my property remaining my property.. 😉

Cheers

mate if thats they way you feel then good on you, i admit i'd never thought to much about it. i understand your reasons and they are valid ones. but don't think for a second that people who don't mind thier plates being seen on here don't like there cars or don't want them to remain thier property. maybe some will learn the hard way maybe not. the police...if you are reading this........it wasn't me it was him......LOL:P

when we go to track days with our bikes, we cover the plates. only because when you go to sell later, for some one to see your bike in a 'happy track' shot leant over at 180klms/h or flying down the straight at 250 plus... it seems to put some off. this company has rights to take photos all day and then sell em to you later. they get displayed over the web. if you dont want your photo you gotta cover up.
funny though that they dont think that worse is done on the streets!

and not quite on this point but it is recognition none the less. i know of one bloke on a forum who is trying to sell his bike. claims it is neat and perfect in everyway and that it can not be faulted on inspection. of course it isnt! it is perfect as it has had a full documented build up from a total write off crash and he bought it from auction. i laugh when he wonders why he can not sell it for the top dollar he is asking. i suppose keeping a little of your identity a secret has some benefit.

well i have known a couple of [ snip ] boys who have a mate in vicroads who just happens to put addresses to number plates and cars go missing thats why my plates come off at shows and my cars dont live where i do ,hey but im just a paranoid ex gt falcon owner whos car was nearly stolen lucky i have an interst in guns also .police can be very understanding at times :thumb god bless them

[ edit: no racial crap here, mate. If you have a charge to make, go see the police and report the scumbag to Vicroads. Their illegal activities have nothing to do with their racial background, just rampant stupidity on their part. ajv ]

do you take your rego sticker off too ?
the large letters are on the new labels for the e-tag cameras to pick up,so they're quite visible, i'm sure your average camera would pick them up

I can see the positives and negatives to both sides. It hasn't really bothered me, but others could be offended - especially if their car does go walkabout. I'll take this issue to the Mods for further discussion.

If you don't want you plates seen it's up to you to cover them up. Be aware, if it is on a road or a road-related area (carpark, nature strip, reserve etc) then you could end up being charged.

People who take pics of a vehicle or a person in a public place, at an event open to public, on private property if the photographer was invited, or even on private property as long as they were not on the private property when they took the pic (eg looking over a fence) then those pics can be published.

Basically, if you don't want something to be possibly published worldwide, don't have it where it can be photographed.

i tend to agree with this statement, the really paranoid ppl probably wouldnt leave their home for a vw show anyway.. when you think about it
so i suppose deal with it and cover em up if you arn't happy with pics..
btw ever had a speed camera fine? probably a good idea to cover em up.. :P

Agree with HotRodMatt on this one. It is up to the individual to cover them up, and furthermore it then becomes their perogative or choosing of what happens and what doesn't.

As you can see, I simply don't care.

How easily can they be traced?

I have custom plates and don't care if they are shown. If someone wants to steal my car then they are going to do it, I drive it every day so someone can easily just follow me home or jot down my rego. Less people probably use the web then on the roads.

I agree with mscabrio
& we buy our plates to show our identity.
as we all know here everyone on this forum can recognize each other from their individual plates.
In some way it could be a good thing, everyone knows my plate....therefore if its put on another "car" at least people on this forum & locally etc. would know that plate is mine
& I would hear about it VERY quickly...
So as stated before if they want to steal it they will try....no matter what
