Don't get to far ahead of yourself. Depending on who he is insured with they may just write your car off and pay you a lot less than you think it is worth. You'll then have a fight on your hand to prove it's value. They just say old VW worth $2000 in the red book. Here you go. See ya later. You then have to fight the bastards. Trus tme this could happen as I work for one of those bastard companies. Keep all you previous insuirance papers to prove you had it insured for what you think it is worth. The way they look at it they will just want to pay you as little as possible and get rid of you. Fixing if it is bad is bad for them as potentially you become trouble not happy with repairs etc and it drags on. They'd rather just pay you out. One thing they can't do though is take your car. You coul dactually make money on it like i did once. they wrote my car off paid me the $2000 as it was deemed unecomical to fix. I spent $350 and had it back on the road a week later. They just don't know where to get stuff.

Third party is usually paid out. When Fleur's beetle got written off by another driver there was no option but being paid out less the salvage value. I had no option but to keep the wreck/ salvage.
I must say the assessor was very understanding of the value of the vehicle and I gave him print outs of about 10 other cars same year that were currently for sale on the internet.
I heard of a simular case where the car was taken without the parents consent and then driven into something expensive, the parents were presented with two options they coulld either fork over the dough..or..report that the son stole the car, that way the son was faced with a charge for stealing the car and insurance covered the damage because it was stolen.
They reported it stolen.

Tell the cops he gave false details, and that you cannot contact him. Stuff grandad, if he wasn't insured under grandads policy, then it's grandads problem. Tell the cops grandads given false details too.
Never argue morality when you can simple argue the law. You will need an incident numbers. I am sure that you MUST have been injured too.
If you play nice, you'll get screwed. Prove it's his fault and false details, and then at least someone will have to pay. It is illegal at an accident not to give true details. Bottom line he jumped the light, broke the law, then gave false details, now getting no joy of the legal owner of the car. Call the plod.
