I have been quoted $3700 for a rebuilt motor
Recon crack tested crankcase if needed $250
ontop of $3700.
The 72 Bug ran out of oil.......good night to the motor !!!
I am told do not pay any more that $500 for the whole car.The rest is in very good condition, paint, body.interior.
A couple of questions
Is $500 to much
What about $3700 +$250
Tell me how much one of those new Mexico 1600 motors
are that they have advertised on the back of VWAust
Magazine
Would they be cheaper than $3900
I am going to ring tonight maybe to make a deal
I would love to get some feed back ASAP
If you add up the bits you will be getting a lot of used parts for a $2000 rebuild if that includes labour to pull the old one.
Good 2nd hand case $500
new crank $400
heads - stock $500
Piston and barrels $300
cam $100
bearings $150
Labour - well, i dont know many people that will pull, rebuild, replace in 2 days... so at least 16 x $45
It adds up
Those mexi motors are all new - so add the above and more.
I have sold VERY good 2nd hand long blocks for as little as $200.00
You need to understand WHAT they are rebuilding. A case that has been line bored 3 times and a crank that has been ground 4 times with heads that have been fly cut half a dozen times and 2nd hand pistons that have new rings and barrels that have been honed for the 40th time........... well, you get the picture.
Now... the other end on the spectron, there is a 1916 on here that will have 2 1/2 time the power of stock is for sale for $5k
in MY opinion - that is a BARGAIN,,,, if that is what you are after.
Even buy they 1916, sell the twin webers, put the old carb rejetted back on and have a motor with 25-50% power increase
I have seen one of those so called "VW Specialist" $2000 reco exchange 2 ltr engines in a mates Kombi,
It is the worst sounding engine I have ever heard, has about 75% of the power of the old worn out engine that came out, but it is still running 12 months on,
beware you get what you pay for.

I 2nd this comment...........I pulled apart an 1800 kombi motor built by a Sydney based VW 'specialist'........it had 3 pistons one size and the 4th another !!! One of the conrod nuts was also missing :jesus...........etc etc
Cost the previous owner....you guessed it......around $2000!
Yes be careful I know of a sydney based vw specialist that i wouldn't take my car to if i had a flat tyre. You need to be very careful.
On the other hand you are after a motor. Sometimes it is cheaper to buy a whole other car and rip it heart out for yours then sell the rest to recoup some of your cash. Just don't be greddy and try and get it all back. Of course you need to have the skills to change the motors over. I did this once. Just got a bomb of a car with good running gear. The rest was parted out mainly to mate for free and the rusted out shell went to the metal man who was very happy.

I've been quoted $3500 for a stock rebuild on a 2L type 4 motor - new crank, pistons, bearings, ULP heads, carbie rebuilds, cam, pushrods, etc...
Then $5000 for a 2.3l rebuild.... Mind you this is from a person I trust...
The last owner of my bus payed $2500 for a rebuild in 2000, and when I replaced the pusrod tube seals, oil cooler seals, and crankshaft end seal discovered that whoever rebuilt the motor used type1 pushrods, hence the rockers are sitting on spacers, and the crankcase has a silicon sealant between the two halves (a big no no- aviation gasket cement is the stuff to use as it squeezes to nothing, and dosen't interfere with bearing tolerances- which silicone sealants do....) This is also why I am having problems with my crankshaft end seal....

Beware of the oil warning light.... When this comes on, damage is starting to happen already......
