I was just looking into the toyota superchargers, either the sc12 or sc14 and it looks like it could be a cheap and good mod. between 7 and 14 psi avaliable at all rpm, and as they are used to engines with 7000+ rpm redlines it shouldn't lose that much power in the top end on a vw engine. If anyone has looked into it or heard any good or bad things about them let me know. otherwise might just be a case of seeing what happens.

Yes they can be "cheap" form of power. However, I know first hand that you cannot get 14psi out of these unless you expect you engine to expire. At 12psi the teflon coating on the rotors breaks down and the coatings peel off the rotors. this ends up in your motor which does nto help it. next the ceramics on the rotors self destruct which does a heap of damage to both the motor and teh supercharger. Advise from most peoples and myself do not exceed 10psi.
apart from that they see ok. I would state that the sc14 is the better of the two and would be fine on a 4 cylinder but seems a little small for a 6 (even though CRS seem to have had resonable success with them.
Cheers
i am not a100% but i think mike from custom bugs and busses in penrith uses toytoa sc's on grumpy.

i have been reading that you can go to 12 on the sc12 and to 14 on the sc14, i would only want to run like say 7 to 10 anyway. and what would be the thoughts on running it through an intercooler and then into boxed twin carbies, this would stop the fuel leak problems of blow through carbies, might have to foam fill the floats though to stop them crushing, but shouldn't be a problem at 7 psi. it just seems a hell of alot cheaper than turboing, and i don't wanna be redlining the can all the time to get max power.

On Cranky. Yes two blowing into a common plenum. Over 40 pounds of boost. But it only runs in anger for 9 seconds at a time.
They have also built them up on 2 litre kombi engines for the street.
haha... dotn know why i said grumpy, and not cranky! thanks matt.

so can anyone help me with this or does it seem like a bad idea? i though it would be similar to setting up a blow thru turbo setup just without having to get a custom exhause fitted. there isn't much info about putting these into a beetle that i have found so far.

won't need intercooling at 7psi and the blower will be 'happy' and not overdriven like it is at double that boost!!

yeah i know i won't need it but i would like it to have really cold intake temperatures if possible, not for performance gain but cause its dam hot up here in summer and should be handy to stop pinging. the way i was looking at it, don't have to run waterlines like to most newer turbos, don't need a custom exhaust. can get a bypass valve and have a switch on the dash to turn it off when doing day to day driving. might be interesting in carpark if i didn't. i was pretty much gonna set it up the same as i was going to for the turbo but seems like it might be colder, cheaper and a better option over all. that and supercharged beetle sounds tougher than turbo beetle to say lol. only down side is i still need a bov 🙁 gotta think of a way to plumb it back well so it doesn't make the ricer whoosh sound. want it to be a sleeper 🙂

i think Greedy51 on here had one on his old kombi Fatso 🙂

this is more of a bump than anything. trying to as much info on them as possible so i don't break to much stuff straight away hehe. just still thinking it might be awesome to get that much torque straight away, good for burnouts hehe, not that i would do them.
trunk monkey, because sometime getting your car back just isn't enough
Nah, don't need a fart valve - make it draw-through with no 'ccoler. Can't have a fart valve without MPSEFI anyway

Do you mean a bypass valve?
My supercharged EH Holden 6 has a 38mm bypass valve to circulate pressure when there is vacuum on the intake side of the manifold, eg. when going down hill or backing off accellerator.
gonna set it up blow through with boxed carbies, should work a treat as dellortos can hadle up to about 13psi blow through without modifications and probably more when boxed. you can get a vlave sorta thing that bypasses the charger itself cause these are roots types that have a clutch type thing that can be turned off with a switch on the dash so you can run them without the charger working to save petrol.

come on everyone, need someone with experience or ideas?

Have been looking into this aswell and found some pretty helpful stats on the s/c here,

Talking to greedy51 about this today and he said the sc12 is better length wise

Are we talking type 1 engines or type 4 engines?
Cause when the engine in my Notch dies, i want to do a type 4 conversion, and a supercharged type 4 sound mighty good 🙂
But i guess the supercharger wouldn't fit under the decklid would it? (hmm... i don't need that generator!) :P
so sc12 are smaller, i like it, i only want about 7-10 psi anyway
for fitting it in i was thinking, with dual carbs, you could sit it obove the centre of the fan shroud and run it straight down to the crank pulley.
thanks for the links, and keep the help comming

Were you planing on changing any of the internals or anything? counterweighted crank etc etc?
better explaining the engine might be a good idea. ok, type 1 based 1916 or what ever they are. counterweight crank, balanced con rods, engle 120 cam, forged pistons, stock heads that have been machined and flow benched, twin 36mm dells, a bit small i know, might have to see if they will handle the extra flow. balance but not lightened flywheel. and a berg pulley. if i go the charger i might have to get the crank wedge mated but thats all future plans for now.

should handle a supercharged fine, greedy wacked one on a absolutely stock 1600 type 1 and it lasted 5 years
