OK - put it all in and yep - brilliant.

Except..............................

I still have a slight rattle noise.

Now, i cant remember how bad it was before, and i dont think this is louder, but if i put my hand on the shifter it may go away.

I didnt take the old ring off, but i dont think it is that, cause it would still rattle with the hand on the shifter.

It more seems to be coming from where the spring is??

Any ideas??

Don't you hate it! I have the same thing. It's going to the mechanic - I can't stand piss-farting around with the stupid thing.

Sometimes I'm so glad I have a type 3. The whole shift rod just pulls out through a hole in the front. Easy to change coupler and bushing, you can even leave the ring on.

It is just you have to pull the carpet out, which means seat out, rear seat out, seat belts out (inertia thingy in the way and stalk on carpet) My carpet kit is one of those many piece kits not the 5 piece ones.

Supers are different over standards where the rod comes out. Standards have a hole in the front.
Supers have a "protection" plate. This one i could not in heavens name get the rod out.

On top i am a messy bugger and this job is GREASY.

Dont think so cause when i apply light pressure it will stop.

Definitely sounds neaar the cup.

More thinking it is wear in the "cup"

Going to try a spare shifter i have. Might even try wrapping the ball in teflon plumbers tape as suggested on SBO

I did pack the cup with grease

mine does that in 3rd gear when accelaratng some times, stops if u hold the gearstick
i cured it once before by playing around with the shift plate postion but i put my quick shift back in 2 weeks ago (it was out so the ex could drive it lol) and its started again
it took me ages to get the shift plate in the right spot again
so that i could get 2nd gear easy but it didnt bind with reverse on down shifting
i know how your feeling i threw spanners and screamed swear words at it many times, just one of those annoying little vw traits:cry
