Some history facts - it was marketed as the vw fuglybug. - cause karman & co had the day off and the janitor had a go. I love the stylish, streamline"box"on the rear lid.

chop the rear end out and glass mould in some wide baja guards then it would look alright.

That's not too horribly ugly. I could live with that. It would need a better engine cover and a complete roll cage and side intrusion bars to keep the rego people and me happy.
It looks a lot like the Type 62 Beetle which was built as a prototype for the German Army. They removed the doors and sides of a stock Beetle, fitted the spare wheel into the front bonnet, like the false spare wheel on the boot of an R series Valiant, and gave it a set of canvas doors and a weather proof roof. It was considered to be too pretty for a war machine and it was given a two tone paint job and it was given to Hitler as a present.
