Hypothetically... (because i am stone broke)... If i were to source a cheap beetle, and paint/work on it myself... roughly how much do you think it would cost to fix up?
I know it's a vague sort of question... i'm just curious cos i wanna build a zippy lil beetle for hoonin around in 🙂

Oh no... did we corrupt you on the cruise? :P
It would depend on the 'cheap' Beetle you found as to how much you'd need to spend on it. 'Cheap' could be because it needs lots fixed, or 'cheap' could be a real bargain with not much to spend. All about being in the right place at the right time.

i have allowed myself 10k doing EVERYTHING myself, it will be zippy .:beer:beer:beer
Don't argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference.
between $4k and $6k realistically. just MHO. That's to build a nice car. you could buy a crap one for less though and just keep it going at a bare minimum, but if you keep hanging round here, you'll soon want to spend more on it. 😉

Ps It's my zippy daily driver
Keeping it real !
depends what you want, my type3 wagon looks rough as guts but is mechanically solid, and she set me back about 2k including rego, roadworthy, minor repairs etc.

coruption is good... I shoulda taken you for a drive before we parted ways... you would've probably sold your camera the next day and bought the first beetle you laid your eyes on.... hehe
There's a white Super Bug in my street that the owners were thinking of selling - looks pretty dam solid, rearely gets driven (but it's not in storage) no rust that I can see, perhaps they might part with it? Last time I heard, they wanted about $3500 for it..
coruption is good

It can be done on the cheap, you just need to be resourceful, and a bit lucky....
My Oval is years away and will be having plenty of cash thrown at it, when I get the cash!! So for now I wanted a cheapie for things like going on club cruises etc, and just a fun car for times when we don't want to go in the boring commodore work car.
Found a 64 Beetle in pretty good cond body wise, just had a seized motor. Body is straight, hasn't been hit, and rust is very minor being mainly in bolt on parts like the decklid & bonnet. Car set me back less than $500. Now if you talk to enough people you may be able to get lucky, I picked up a 40Hp runner for next to nothing, spend a bit on ancillaries like leads, plugs, oil etc and there we have a motor for less than $100. While the motor was out I replaced the gearbox mounts just to be safe. Fuel line needs replacing as the OG one has rusted in the tunnel, bit of bundy tube down the side of the pan where the body bolts on solves that, not too expensive. That's really all it needed to be a runner.
I wanted it closer to the ground (read: in the weeds), so I bought a couple of adjusters, caster shims, and steering coupling for about $80 bucks, and went around to my cousins workshop, and less than a day later had a 2 inch narrowed adjustable beam. Got some skinny tyres for it so it doesn't scrape (and looks cooler) from a mate (again nice & cheap). Rear end will be coming down to suit, cost $0 (well maybe a few beers & pizza for the mates)
About $50 got me various polishes & wet/dry paper to try and bring the flat lookin ruby red paint back to life, will also be trying to make the trim nice & shiny before it goes back on.
Apart from rego & a new 6V battery thats about all I've spent on it, well under $1K, and it should be a pretty cool cruiser when it hits the road (hopefully this weekend). Sure I'd like to get more carried away with it like a paint job & a good motor (may do the motor in the future) but you have to draw the line somewhere and remember the bigger picture of spending the money where it will be the most beneficial (for me thats the 54 Oval)
Go for it!!!

Not yet, its still under tarps until I can sell the old one in my avatar. The old one is in the FS section now with some pics, so when someone takes that shell then the new one can go into the shed & get the tarps taken off & some pics can go up. Hint, hint......

ARGH... thats not a beetle... its a portable picnic table :P
I might start saving up and go the dodgy under $1000 option to start with and see where it goes. I'll get myself a workshop manual and sit there staring at the bottom of the engine for a while
😀 :thumb
Still... it'll probably all be a long way off... gonna be renting a house as of next month... so i will be broker than broke... but it'll be worth it
