Hi Guys - this forum is great! Well done.

I have a 1600cc kombi and the engine has expired - was making a very loud klacking noise last time it was run - took the engine out to get it rebuild or repaired only to find the local guys here (airlie beach queensland) want between $2000 and $3000 to either rebuild/repair or replace (this is without seeing it or looking at it)....seems a lot ...any suggestions?

If you grab a version of VWMA you will see adds for Remtec - and that is the price range for rebuilt to new 1600 engines.

That all said - it depends what is wrong with it. If it is making " a very loud klacking noise" good chance it is inside the case. That means FULL rebuild and not just heads, pistons and cylinders.

If full rebuild, it is line bore, new bearings, reset end play - blah blah blah

If you are just after some thing to get you going - there are 1600's regulary coming up for under $500 in good condition.
Maybe this is what you need - but once you have shipped it to Ayrlie and paid a mechanic to remove and replace you will have spent.....$900?? maybe

I reckon the Airlie mechanics might like relieving Euro backpackers of as much $ as possible!

there is a VW specialist at Bribie Is. Is that far from you?

I'd personally get a motor built up by a good VW specialist if you plan to keep the car for any length of time.

You may even like to consider a 1640 for a little bit of extra grunt at a fraction more $.

really, I would have thought a 1640 would be just the ticket. still cool ok but no machining needed. Stan Pobjoy seems to be happy to put them in Kombis and he's very fussy as you know.

Hi Pete. Not all VW "specialists" are good value. Called in at one such today on the way home to see if there was anything of interest and the workshop was the dirtiest I've seen anywhere. Can't tell you exactly where it is but it's somewhere between Blacktown and North Richmond!!

If we start off building a motor with a good case and crank, the slip in parts make it easy for the beginner to build a more than moderately reliable engine which should last for years.

If anyone in this area wants either the case or heads cut for larger cylinders or just re-seating, they may be able to just twist my arm to do so! Been doing it for 40 years now so nothing's new. Cost? ................... some agreed on "fee" as I have a real job which pays the bills much better than machining grubby old engines!

You only need two tools
Wd40 if it don't move and it should
Duct tape if it move's and it shouldn't
