Can anybody tell me if the heat riser tubes on a type 1 inlet manifold are 1 piece of tubing that runs right through the cast aluminium section or if they are 2 pieces of tubing that go in each side of the aluninium section with a hole through the middle connecting them.

I want to fix up the manifold on my beetle (not keen on $160 plus for a newy) and just wanted a heads-up before I break out the grinding implements.

Cheers
Brendan

before you break into grind and cut mode get a drill and an old piece of pipe snake and sharpen the end ,whack it in the drill and work it thru the carbon ...if you cant find a snake try a piece of flex curtain rod spring stuff .saves a lot of grief later:beer:beer:beer
Don't argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference.

Try an old clutch cable in ur high speed drill. It will depend on the severity of the impaction- I've never had much luck!
For me it has been nec to cut at the dog-legs going to the exhaust BUT NOT RIGHT THRU then bend them out of the way for a LONG drill bit to go thru the carbon.
A tip: Mount the manifold & tack weld the cuts before re-welding properly with the manifold on a bench. It makes lining up the manifold bolts easier!

i cleaned mine out years ago when i still had a single carb set up by sitting it upside down and filling it with a very harsh cleaner (was called activeshift is almost acid LOL) overnight and the clutch cable in the drill trick the next day worked a treat
the standard ones were one piece but alot of after market replacements are in 2 pieces so they can be fitted and removed more easily

why do i see so many beetles with them cut off:duh
they barely stop icing when clean with a standard exhaust:o

Craig,
Will they work on a 1300twinport or would they be to much?

Never tried ! I think they would, but probably not worth the expense etc for the minimal gain. Could always fit 1600 p&b's ??

I did this last week oxy, hammer and a lot of patience. I found heating (red hot) and quenching helped loosen deposits.

"Do I wish to send them to you again, nope, no interest can't be bothered really, to much hassle for little or no return."

The heat riser tubes are nearly always blocked, so they rarely work and are very difficult to clean. In winter I used to fit a warm air pipe from behind the engine to the air cleaner. The icing up and the coughing and spluttering stopped. Beetles have a provision for warm air intake and if yours is not connected, then do so in winter.
