I just had an urge to open the hood of PBB and noticed a wire had come loose from the little black box thing behind the speedo dial. About a fortnight ago my indicator light on the speedo died, and I assumed it was just the globe as it still made the clicky noise and exterior lights all work fine. Now it looks like this wire could be the source? It's a blue and green striped wire.
Thing is, there are two empty plugs on this black box where it could go, but I don't know which is the right one and don't want to stuff something up by putting it on the wrong plug. 😉
If you're looking at the black box (12volt silver thing is on your left) the top double-plug has a thick blue wire, and also a black/white with green bands, and the front plug is empty. The second plug down has a thick white wire. The third plug down is empty (my guess is this is where my loose wire goes, but I'm not 100%)... and the fourth plug has a thick brown wire. Where does my little loose wire go? The top empty spot, or the third one down?
I'd take a photo to show what I mean, but I'm at work and my camera is at home. :P

Are these wires going to the lights in the back of the speedo or the relay box.....?
Sounds like the relay box.....
I can't help with the wire colors as I've renewed all My wiring....
Its strange for a terminal to come off....
they are "usually" tight.... but not always...
The small blinker light is in the centre of the bottom of the speedo... and the terminal sticks straight out...
If No wire is going to the bulb holder this is where it goes.
If its connected to the bulb holder OK....
it probably goes to the relay box...

I'm guessing it's the relay box but I don't know the names.... just don't like the idea of a wire floating about as I'm driving.
I'll try to get a photo of it tonight though. 🙂
just get some sticky tape and put it over the bare metal part till u get it sorted to save it shorting out and melting the wire and possibly damaging something else/ popping a fuse.
blue with a green stripe on my bugs was the oil light wire i think
blinker light wire is usually black with a white and green stripe

Joel
well heres a pic of the wiring in my 70 bug which would be the same as urs BUT it probably really doesnt help as its a bit "yea mate she'll getya home" style and quite a few are the wrong colour as i pinched bits from my other beetles to get her electrics going again
the blinker light wire is blue with a red trace and joins a big blue wire which goes to 49A on the blinker relay (square silver box with VW symbol on it)

My 68 Beetle has a black bakelite relay box...
Not sure what model it came from....
but the blinker wire does go to it...
so if You have a spare terminal, You could try that...
just make sure the wire goes to the centre bulb holder behind the speedo at the bottom....
if the wire does come from there, it won't hurt anything..
as all that can happen is that the light will come on...
Guessing... the wire comes off the relay box as the terminals on the bulb holders are usually very tight....
Don't You have a long cover that covers the back of the dashboard Laura?
or did You take it off?

:bounce hi
Lee, I do have a wire cover that I bought for my Bug, but haven't fitted it yet as I'm not sure the best way to? Any ideas on that much appreciated!
Anyway, here's a pic of my query:
The second empty plug is where I'm guessing the loose wire should go... yay or nay?
Looking at the bend in the wire, as though it was there before, it should plug in there nicely.
Try it and see I reckon.
Cheers.

Well, I plugged the loose wire onto the second empty plug and no indicator light flashes in my speedo dial still. So what is this wire for (if colour is anything to go by), or what is the plug supposed to have connected there? It was too dark last night and this morning for me to try tracing it back to the source and I didn't have a torch. I'll see if I get a chance to have a looksee today during my lunch break if I get one. :P The top empty plug looks as though it's never been used for anything and I don't want to stuff something up by trying the wire onto it, unless someone can 100% assure me it'll be fine to try it?
Does anyone happen to know what each wire is for that plug onto this black relay box thing? Even if the wire colours are different from Bug to Bug, surely each plug is for a certain thing... my manual doesn't say. 😢
Hahaha, it's amazing what daylight can do! :P
I just got right inside my bonnet (lucky I'm little!) and had a better look at this black box thing where I'm sure the loose wire came from... and there's actually a piece of white carboard with coloured rectangles around each plug, corresponding to the colour of the wire, so I did put the wire onto the right one! 😉
So now I guess it is my turn signal globe in the speedo which has gone? How on earth do I check and change it? :duh
You should be able to just pull out the globe holder from the speedo, little one. make sure you pull it ouf by the metal holder and not just the wire, otherwise you'll be up from some soldering! (i'm pretty sure this applies to the later beetles, on the early beetle speedos, they just pull out..) good luck pixie
...and Robert's ya father's brother...
From the front or the back? I have no idea... LOL 😂
Hi Laura,
thats a coincidence that the bulb blew and the wire popped off.... maybe ghosts... lol
That is the same relay box I used....
the wire should go to the centre bulb holder in the bottom of the speedo....
You might have to unscrew the speedo cable as I couldn't actually see the 3 tell tale lamps in the bottom of My Speedo... too many wires....
I take a pic of the bulb holder to show You what You are pulling out... Now its best if You can grab the outer edge of the bulb holder, as if You just pull on the wire,
the bulb may pop out into the speedo.... as the bulb is spring loaded against the piece that the wire comes off..
I have done it without the bulb falling into the speedo,
but if that happens, the speedo would probably have to be pulled apart to retreive the bulb....
I wouldn't tempt fate....
I'll post the pics in a few minutes..Lee

Wow, thanx for those pics Lee, such a huge help!! 😁
I'll see if I can remove the bulb tonight and hope it's blown... else my car is more of a Herbie than I thought! :P
Can the little bulbs just be bought from Bursons or something similar? Or are they veedub specific?
Can be hard to find Larry.
I might have a spare u can have.
