I wouldn't mind one but I don't want to do dual carbies as it makes it so tight in the engine bay. Single carby wouldn't do it justice I don't think. Any comments?

that is the set up i have.

My engine was built by Peter Shelley @ Canberra VW Centre http://www.cvwc.com.au/menu_page.htm

It is a 1916 with a stock 34 Pict, and was a stock exhaust but i put one ov the VW headers on.

I get 50 ponies at the wheels whick is a solid 25%+ over stock.
No - its not a 6 sec 0-100 car, but it is a great improvement over stock and makes for a brilliant daily driver.

I would seriously think about it with a single carb

Curiosity question Barry, as I have thought of doing that myself...

What jets do you run in the 34 pict ?
What cam do you have ?

What sort of economy do you get ?

i remember i was about to go into a club one night in brisbane and this group of massive lebanese guys like deadset must have all been 6"4 150kg juiced up something terrible saw me park my bug and walked over on over - im thinking.. here we go $%(S going to hit the fan.... lol

anyway - they were like "hey man - you into vws - come check ours out blah blah"

turns out they were all 1916s with single stock carbs - so i went for a drive in one as to not say no and get the crud kicked out of me and they hauled ass off the line!

absolutely no top end and waste of the potential of a 1916 but they were a bucket load of fun! hehe

You could run a single weber or dare I say it a bugspray, this would give you abit more go. Bizarre are you sure you get 50hp at the wheels my 1678 with a bugspray and ecno extractors makes that :o

Just a few questions,

do these come assembled? can i get them in parts only?
Also any chance of getting the case not machined for 94mm barrels?
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

What jets do you run in the 34 pict ? - Just called peter Shelley out of interest. He says they just go to a 132 - 135 main

What cam do you have ? - He says it is a Porsche Super 90 grind

What sort of economy do you get ? - pretty good. 11L / 100kms in Sydney traffic. 8L/100kms on the road.

absolutely no top end and waste of the potential of a 1916 but they were a bucket load of fun! - yep. Good description. I am sure it doesnt have a CW crank, and the cam is fairly mild, so it will never get to over 100 ponies no matter what i do. Just want a dub that is driveable. Was thinking of duals but - sort ov over that.

Bizarre are you sure you get 50hp at the wheels my 1678 with a bugspray and ecno extractors makes that - yep. Had it dynoed at CBB on dyno day last year. Stock carb and stock exhaust. Am sure it is stock heads as well. Had a 1776 with dual Webbers, exhaust and ported standard valved 040's and that made 61. Mate had a 1600 with dual webbers - 50HP. Another had a Shelley 1916 with kads 61HP. CT with webbers and workrd heads 73HP. Never seen a 1600 get 40HP at any of the dyno days in Sydney or posted from Melbourne. These are all Dyno Dynamic Shoot Out rear wheel ponies.

Thanks for that guys. 50 horses isn't too bad with stock everything on it. Just didn't want to put dual carbies and I also want to run stock heater boxes on it so the exhaust needs to be pretty standard too. I thought about a webber single but I have already bought a new 34 pict carbie that was designed for an alternator (don't have to bend the lever as it is already done). Maybe I should call Rod to talk about it.

Yep, I think if I was building a bug now, I'd be doing an early 60's / late 50's one, lowered, some accessories, stock interior but big stereo and 1916 with 34pic.

In terms of $per hp, thats pretty good. Economy is better than my 1835 with dual kads, which gets about 12 - 12.5L / 100km in my 25km a day work commute.... never really driven it highway much....

I am real interested in this thread. I have just re built my 1776, with stock cam, slightly larger inlet valves and stock exhaust valves, swivel feet, 34 pict carb, 009 districutor, genie extractors and a custom glasspack exhaust.

I had my twin Dells on it until recently but they are causing an amateur like me no end of sleepless nights.

So I obtained a distributor with vacuum and mechanical advance and stuck that in, and then I plonked the 34 PICT on and it didnt run too good. So I jetted it 140 mains, 60 idle, and 75 air corectors (standard is 130?/55/60). Boy what a difference. I havent got a clue how many HP it makes. It makes heaps of torque to about 4k revs, pulls like a steam train off the line and from about 1500rpm. So now I can actually drive through roundabouts without changing down! Extremely smooth on the road and possibly the most driveable combo I have ever had in a VW (except my new car in 1968 of course)

I think I have probably got too big a main jet in it but I will live with it until I can get myself a 135 and then try that. Economy is not known yet as I only did it last week.

I am looking for a fix for my twin carb problems with my 1916 which has bigger heads, with Engle 110 cam. I am seriously thinking of the 34 PICT option.

Thanks for the info guys.

Barry - no idea of RWHP, but at a guess I would have thought maybe 75 - 80 at the flywheel - it has 044 heads with no port work but slightly oversize valves, cant remember exactly what size..... and only 8.5:1 compression....

Only problem is a poorly chosen cam (HSC 2) means not very much happens till about 2700rpm..... which is not the best for day to day driving !

And what would you expect out of a stock 1600 (and dont say 60HP)??

Now add 330cc (21%)

The cam is mild - so dont expect it to contribute.

What should it be?? 60??.....70???

Hmmmm..... all those guys getting high 60's / low 70's with worked heads, merged headers and dual carbs must be pissed

This is in excess of 25% over stock (no not a 9:1 CR 1600... i said stock)

For a simple change i call it good - remember the ONLY real change is volume

Anyway......... thanks for bumping this Jak 👍
