Hi all,
have issues with our 2L kombi:
- there is a whine from around the engine when freewheeling - particular down hills from between 60-8kph. Could it be cv joints?
- there is also a bad case of exhaust fumes in the past 24 hours inside the cabin ... might i need a whole new exhaust?
Any advice happily accepted.
Cheers,
Tom
CV's generally get a knocking/clunking sound when cornering left/right as the first signs of wear. Wheel bearings is more of a grinding/vibrating sound and again will vary cornering left/right as the bearing gets more or less load. Both change pitch with road speed (not engine RPM).
Could be a GB bearing or gear on the way out. Can you hear it at idle, and does it change with the clutch in/out?? (for a manual GB of course).

Could be the diff whining. This is common on 2 litre gear boxes.
Fumes could be cracked heat exchanger or leaking ehaust gasket.
my bus whines a bit in all gears... unless its SUPER loud i wouldnt worry too much, or if it has just started all of a sudden. Check your gearbox oil level, mayb even replace it with some sinthetic stuff...
As for the fumes, open the front air vent, this will cause positive pressure in the cabin, if its too cold, on the sides of your drivers doors there are little sliders, slide them so they are closed (all the way back???). Only a temporary fix, but be cautious of exhaust gases, a big enough hit of carbon monoxide and you will pass out and possibly die from the fumes, if not a crash. If its just a hint of exhaust fumes then its unliking this will happen, but keep it in mind.

In regards to the fumes have you spilled any oil around the motor. I somehow got some oil in the heater boxes a few years ago and had smoke and fumes inside. It is a real pain and takes ages to go away.

thanks for the replies.
The solution is kind of ironic ...
I had my mobile panel beater due to come out and sort out the dent under the engine compartment today but put him off so that I could take the kombi to my part-time mechanic who was able to diagnose the exhaust fume problem stemming from the inabililty to close the engine compartment - due to the dent ...
hmmm.
Seems that the open engine compartment at the back was sucking exhaust fumes into the engine bay and therefore into the cabin a little too - enough to smell (and taste ...) bad.
He reckons the whine is either rear tyres or rear wheel bearings. I personally hope it's the former not the latter!
Thanks again for your comments,
