Hi Damien,
There are two rectangular holes in the sides of Your gearbox...
Its much easier to undo the 4 special torque converter bolts thru the RH side hole [near the starter motor]
if You take the Right heater box [heat exchanger] Off..
You turn the engine with a spanner, until the bolt comes into view in the hole... You undo each one in turn....
Make sure You use the correct 8mm socket on the special bolts which are very hard to find....
[impossible]?? Very Important: don't drop the small bolts into the cavity... as they can jam up the flexplate and You won't be able to turn the engine to undo the other bolts....
You can take the engine out with the torque converter,
but about 2 litres of Auto Transmission Fluid comes with it..... VERY Messy....
You will need to renew the torque converter seal if the torque converter is taken off the gearbox...
The part number is : 001 301 083 for 1968-70 models..
A different seal is used after 1970- 001 301 083B

You will need to take take the hoses off where they connect to the pipes on the oil pump...
Make sure You hold the pipes with a spanner while undoing the hose....

Is this enough info Damien?
I suggest You undo the 4 special bolts thru the RHS hole

Here is a pic of the torque converter with the engine out.
I over greased the gland nut.. which doesn't really need grease in it... in the auto,,,

Damien,
I'm with Lee on this. Engine out first. Why make a rod for your own back?? The trans needs to be manipulated a bit to come out, so why have the donk hanging off it!

If your converter bolts are standard you need a "12 point" socket or double hex they are sometimes called.

Remember you also need (well, should!) a 12 point spline bit for the CV bolts on the trans (again, if they are standard...). Life will be much easier.

Hi Sean,

My Beetle hasn't got the multi hex bolts for the torque converter/ flexplate.. just standard hex head....

All My CV Joint bolts are standard allen heads too...
My Sons are too... His is a 69 Beetle...

I used His allen key sockets ....
I don't know where You would get the special 12 point or double hex splined "allen" keys??
Some of My manuals says both sort were used....
maybe the standard ones only on early Beetles....
I don't know.... but it does make it a bit easier...

I have seen the multi sided cv joint bolts...
but I wouldn't mind any sort of Flexplate bolts....
it looks like I'll have to make some more allen headed
bolts for the flex plate or tidy the ends of mine up a bit..

it looks like the flexplate has turned up.... I wasn't home but have a post office parcel card.... to pick up..

cheers
Lee

Lee/Damien,
Interesting. The '70 donor bug's CV's were all fitted with the 12 point ones and so's the 71.

But you guys have earlier cars so you never know until you look I guess!!

Any VW place will have the CV tool if you have 12 point ones. I have a seperate Minimax Bit kit which had them in it so I was lucky..... it's called an 8mm trisquare...

Sean
