I have a early 70s beetle that was sold to me as having a 1600 dual port.... the engine number is AB 219088
I've seen a few different interpretations of this code on different sites... one says AB is the replacement case code and the other says that it is a 1300.

What's the truth?
How can you tell the difference between a dual port and single port?
Is there any such thing as a 1300 dual port?

The Beetles VIN is 1112 65 6363.
Any info would be appreciated 🙂

The difference between the single and dual ports are at the heads. Look to see if it has a single round manilfold going to the heads, or a larger oblong shaped manifold going to the heads.
If I had a picture I'd post it up, but I don't!
As far as I know you can get 1300 dual ports.

P.S: My 1600 TP (Dual Port) has a prefix of AD I think.

If your engine has been rebuilt, the engine capacity can be increased by using larger barrels and pistons even though the serial numbers stamped on the engine suggest that it is a 1300. The only way to accurately check engine displacement is to remove the heads to inspect the piston size (correct me if I am wrong anyone?). Theoreticaly, if it is a stock standard engine and hasn't been rebuilt at some time and it has a serial number that suggests that it is a 1300 then it may well be a 1300 engine. A dyno test could also determine if the engine capacity has increased by the extra horsepower the engine has (or should have). Hope this helps.

If you can't fix it with a hammer,
you have an electrical problem....

AB engines where the 1300 twin ports in the 71-73 pov model beetle
in 74 they changed to AR liek the one i got

like someone said the 1600 cylinder kits fit straigght in and are cheaper so nearly all of them have gone that way
not to many VW engines arent rebuilt these days

hope this helps

Fron '71 when the Superbug (1600S, Twin port) was introduced there was also a Standard Beetle offered which had drum brakes on front and a 1300 Twin port motor, these are often assumed to be 1600 TP motors by those who are unaware. So possibly the person who sold it to you mistakingly thought that it was a 1600 TP because it had Twin port heads.
Yours is a '71 year model, check if it has drum bakes on front, if so it is a Standard 1300.
The 1300 TP is a good strong motor putting out similar power to a 1500 single port.
Cheers.

The twin port 1300 is a small valved engine and is a ripper. I will say probabally one of the best

Not to be compared to a 1300 single port from the late 60's
They are duel relief oil passage and make a brilliant base gor the next rebuild.

To be honest, driving one i doubt many people would tell the difference

i have a 73 standard with a 1300tp - not a "pov 1300"...

i think one of the better engine-tranny stock combos!

sounds like a slip in 1600 - all the same - fantastic engine

A torsion bar ball joint front end beetle with a 1300cc Twin Port engine is a great combination...

Fuel economy would also be good....

They were less expensive than the Super beetle with the swing rear axle and drum brakes all round...

[No air cooled Beetle in the USA was ever sold with disc brakes...]

You can of course add used discs from a donor car or from someone on here....
but drum brakes can be adjusted to work extremely well.

Thanks for all the info guys!!
We're dropping this one plus its gearbox into the Tinkerbeetle as her "porsche 914" motor is a bit sad and the gearbox is crunchy
(but it tastes no good with ketchup) so hopefully it'll have a bit of grunt as I quite enjoy leaving the riceburners behind at the lights scratching their heads. LOL!!

If the motor has ever been rebuilt it is more than likely 1600 as it is cheaper than doing as 1300.
Cheers.
