I have a 1970 T3 Squareback. Over the last few weeks a front wheel wobble has developed. It occurs predominantly on straight road sections and between the speeds of 60 to 100 klm. The vibrations are quite bad and causes the steering whel and colomn to shake.
Any ideas? Shocks, bushes?
I would check your wheel nuts and bearings are adjusted properly... jack the front of the car up and grab the wheel at the top and the bottom, and try to move it to and fro, see if it has any movement like that.
Could be a loose wheel bearing.... worn out...
but it would be loose all the time...!!
Your steering damper could be worn out...
You nearly have to take it off to test it...
they are just like a small long shock absorber...
and You should have to use force to push in and out...
If it goes in & out very easily.... its no good...
If its leaked oil... its no good....
Worn shocks should let You know on bumpy sections of the road.....
If You jack up the front, You should be able to feel a worn wheel bearing.... wheel should move slightly in & out
Could be something as simple as wheel weights, used to balance Your wheels, has come off...
these can be on either side of the wheel, and if one has come off, You can normally see where it came from...
they can be around 20mm to around 75mm long usually..
most wheels do have them....
Could be a worn tie rod end.... easily fixed....
or ball joint ... which isn't too easily fixed.... at home.....
Some suspension or tyre outlets have a test routine they do for a fixed amount of dollars.... that would be good...
some charge as little as $14 [from memory]??
Best of Luck..

Hi
Type 3s have a have a bolt in the top control arm that sometimes work its way loose, its right in the middle of the arm where it pivots, running across the car, cant remember which side. The top arms are for the internal sway bar, thats what the bolt goes into, the bottom arms are the torsion arms.

Sounds like a dodgy tyre to me.
