Type 4 motors are generally stronger as they are aluminium, thus they are not as prone to cracking or damage to the bearing saddles. The block is also generally bigger, heavier and more robust.

Is this what you we asking?

the heads of most well used type4 motors are usually stuffed since most people flog their buses, and of course the 1700 motor, of which there are not that many compared to 1.8, 2 litre motors, was the least powerful of the type4's, so least power usually equals more flogging equals more wear. but the bottom ends are pretty well bullet proof except for the camshaft which on all buses is the weak link.

If it is rebuilt properly with a line bore, new cam, new 1800 pistons and barrels, new 1800 heads, I would say it would be a very sweet motor good for 100,000 k's of revvin'

Our 1800 we used to have actually had some go in it with the twin carbs, and I would think a 1700 would not be far behind it. Definitley went heaps better and was more reliable than a 1600 type 1 engine in a bus. I had a friend who had his 1600 crack it's case in his bus several times.

The weak link it appeared in our 1800 over the years was the heads.

Now comparing the 2.2 Subaru motor we now have is a totally different story. A more expensive one, with quite a substantial power increase.
