Dad's worry about buying a 2nd hand dub is bodgy sales. something about tricks of the trade to make engines and trannies sound quieter than what they really are for like 5 mins, till u drive away.

Is there anyway to find ur way around this and be protected?

hehe, banana leaves in the gears, what was dad saying...

actually chris, ur dad is right..

there are a few ways people who know how can make a car nice and quiet...even up to six months...then at end...u find their methods caused more damage than u could have expected..

the 'stop leaks' range were always reknown as a good 5 minute fix...

put them in...good for a short while...long enough to sell the car...and then after a bit...bam!

if ur buying from a person...then take someone who knows the tricks and can check for them...have a checklist so u dont overlook anything in the excitement of buying....the friend/family member plays 'devils advocate'...ie...see thr rust, whats the bubbles...is this a leak mark...check this crack etc etc...

Also, ask around...see if anyone knows the person selling...ask about their rep...

and if ur buying from a dealership...yes some still sell vws in good condition...ask about a warrenty...sometimes u can purchase them for a bit extra from 'motoring groups' that specialise in offering warranties for the second hand arenas....but i think they only do so if the dealership subscribes to the schemes...

anyhow...hope the info helps...good luck looking
dubless. 🥲

treat it as a piece of crap unless proven otherwise.

Spend enough for a good car to start with, you will ALWAYS end up spending more to 'fix it up' unless you REALLY know what you are doing. Sure some have bought a car for a case of beer and drove it for 50 years but most buy for too much, spend lots then end up with an expensive old nail.

See how many 'projects' on here have receipts for $000's but are not finished or are an 'easy fix' but are not done?

Look at heaps of cars to get a feel for them. Kow where they rust.

Buy a stocker unless you really trust the person who did the work.

Have it checked out by a VW mechanic. If the seller won't let you do that, move on.
If you're buying s'thing 30-40 years old it's prob gonna need s'thing done somewhere. Or buy one already done and spend more for the piece of mind.
What's the budget and what do you want to buy?
