Well it finally happened, going for a drive to the grandparents place & I asked my twins what car they wanted to go in, mums car (N15 pulsar Q) or dads car (72 beetle) & my son says "mummys car, dads car to noisy", so I need a more quiet exhaust. Ive currently got extractors with a hotdog style muffler & Im thinking of going for a hide-away muffler/extractor set. I need the ground clearance as well.
Any comments on this setup or thoughts for a quite set up would be appreciated.

Hotdogs are worse than useless, so I suggest that you keep the extractor set for efficiency and fit to it the quietest muffler that will fit in the space available.

here is the blue one mate

and here is my old t4 system which was also on the 1600 i ran before that

it ran parallel to the guard for ground clearance had a nice note. it was an inch and 7/8 system.

Supertraps? Don't know about legalities but they do work. Plus for fun times you can remove some of the baffle plates.:P

We just put an empi "quiet" sports exhaust system on my bug. That combined with the motor that has just been put it, it sounds like a whole different car now...soo much quieter!
