Hey fellas, thanks all for ur help in the other welding threads i had. (especially Peter, cheers mate).

I have saved $300 in my little money can, time to look for a discount MIG. MY PROB: Welders i have looked at so far are a 15 Amp Input, my meter box is only going to support 10 Amp. I have been looking at migs.

Its probably gonna cost me heaps to get an electrician to buy and fit a 15amp wateva wateva into the box for me to use 🙁 Anyone know of any 10 amp ones, or for $300, i can go another option at all with that money?

This is the biggest bump in the road for me with the car. THE BIGGEST 🙁 its whats draggin' me down unfortunately.

ebay, get a good 2nd hand from factory or something. Mayb go 2 auctions etc.

with ur house mains, unless the gauge of wire supplying your house wont take more than 15amps, all you would need to do is fit a heavier fuse, and make sure wiring is going to handle the extra load... but if you dont know what ur doing get an electrician.. this is how people burn their houses down! make sure you get it done right!

I use a 15 amp welder through 10 amp sockets with no probs.
Remeber you will be welding at close to the lowest setting most of the time on cars.

This may sound a bit dodgy, but if you think about it, it is not so bad. You can grind the earth pin down on a 15A plug to make it fit a 10A socket.

Now remember that most GPO (general power outlet) have two sockets. Well that makes the total of that GPO 20Amps capability if both sockets have something plugged in drawing the maximun of 10A. Usually when a 15A GPO is fitted it is fitted with the same wiring and only 1 outlet socket.

Make sense?

Or make your own extension lead.
I have a 1ft lead with a 15amp female socket and 10amp male socket.

might get a mate to do it instead.

Will offer $100 or something for a days work... He will be happy.

Either that, or anyone in QLD up for the job, $100 day pay for a days work...

I'll elaborate if malcolm doesn't mind.

Gasless is not suitable for panel work. It is not going to give a very good finish if you want to weld panels satisfactorily and linish those welds back to a smooth blended finish. You are more likley to end up with some porosity.

Still at the end of the day it is your choice. You don't HAVE to go MIG.

Personally in my experience if you want to metal finish you are better off oxy fusion welding. Thing is how many people are able to metal finish?

Chris, you will be cheaper in the long run getting a mig and learning to weld.

or buying a rust free one

I have a sip 120 amp mig i bought from a tool supply shop.I have only 10A power and also have to use a pretty long extension lead. This adds to power loss.As such i have a selction of three switchs for the power.I have all of them on the high settings.I have also changed to .6mm wire( it came with .9mm) and am using argosheild gas.
The welder was around the $600 mark and the gas is 100 a year and 30 a bottle. It welds ok.Nothing too thick. But for sheet metal ok.
A little tip. Before you start learning how to mig,dip the end into some cooking oil or spray some anti spatter onto the tip to stop the wire welding itself to the tip.
