My Spare is a 165x15 inch tyre which is deflated....
as it won't fit in My [Non Super] Beetle inflated...
I just carry a small compressor with Me...

Anyone else have the same problem?

I don't think You can buy 155x15 tyres any more...
so a 135x15 spare may be the answer....

Anyone here with a 74 non super Beetle....?

What size spare tyre do You have ??

I know all the earlier 50 and 60s beetles would have the same problem.....
I know of one AVD user asking Me about a year ago of the problem...
She had found the spare flat so She pumped it up...
Then it wouldn't fit back in its place....

135 x 15 tyre needed.... [like a spacesaver tyre]...

72 Standard bug with 165 fully inflated, tight but it does fit.
Had a 69 beetle that I had to have fairly low pressure in the spare.

Cheers

Yes, I have seen cross ply tyres in as spares in Beetles...

I don't really like them...
a 135 0r 145 won't really match either but I suppose they will all get You out of trouble....
which is what they are for.....

I'll look for a used 135 or 145...

cheers

We had a 165 in our 68 and the bonnet would close but when we put a carpet cover on it, it was too tall. It was also very tight to pull out of the hole for it. We ended up putting in a smaller one. I think it was a 135 but it may be a 145 but it was on the same rim the 165 was fitted to.

Now it drops in and pulls out really easy and it can have the carpet cover on it as well to make it look nice.

the only reason they dont fit usually is becuase of accident damage or a new valance that doesnt fit real well

ive seen a few bugs like this

heres the spare wheel well of my 74 1300,
it fits easy as but its never been in a prang amazingly and thats a later 4.5 inch rim
as u can see its got bout 20mm to spare

look for slight wrinkles in the sides of the well or welds that dont quite look factory

Looks like the answer is a 4.5 inch rim. Most beetles have 5 or 5.5s i think.

What size tyre do You have in it...???

as 155 x 15s were the standard size for Beetles...
until 1972...
when the wider rims were introduced.....
then 165 x 15 was the tyre size....
so Maybe the front valance in Yours was made larger- wider... for the larger tyres...

and the front of my Beetle hasn't been damaged either...

if u double click on the pic u can see the tyre size
its just a garden variety 165x15

heres a pic of the wheel well in my rota bug
its got a small crease from a prang that looks almost factory LOL
but if it didnt have that stupid radiator bracket i could find out if the spare wheel still fits

I have heard of that problem ....
but usually with early bugs....

I thought a 74 would have a widened valance for the wider wheel, rim and tyre....
maybe it was for the USA etc market where they had special editions like GT Beetle Jeans Beetle Sun Bug
Formula Vee Bug Marathon Beetle, Baja Bug, etc....

Or... Maybe VW didn't really do a good job putting our bugs together...??
the 165x15 tyres & wider wheels fit fine in the type 3s,
bit then they always had the wider wheels etc...

Lee

MY Son has a tyre that will fit.... crossply in good condition....
