Hi Guys,
I'm currently rebuilding a kit car running a Type 3 chassis.
See car here..
http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=53476
The car has no working brakes ATM (except the hand brake). I love cars with good brakes almost as much as cars with a bit of power so I want to update them.
I'm in Brisbane so I have looked at the Custom Offroad website & found this rear brake kit.
Called a IRS rear brake unit @ $1100. But they don't seem to have a Front kit to go with it?
Are there any other option out there?
Are the STD fronts OK? (I'm guessing No..)
I will be buying new Mags for this car also before I get it back onto the road so is it better to change to a Ford or Holden stud patern?
Thanks
Darren Baker
the COR units pictured are XF Ford units but they will modify the EA-ED caliper brackets there is a thread on here on this conversion

The high price is because they must sell new components for conversions not 2nd hand by law.Cheaper option is to supply your own gear and get the caliper bracket modified.

I,m using Ford stud pattern due to the fact a wider number of manufactures use 5x 114.5 pcd and better et offset,s .A friend of mine has a type 1 balljoint front end set up with the PBR twin piston calipers and vented disc he was also using a brake booster and ford ea rear disc on the back ,but I don,t think hes using the front end anymore due toit being unstable @ 240 cliks.

COR have front kits as well, but the type3 front discs are very good. When you do the rear conversion, think about a vacuum booster.
And go for 114.3mm PCD 5 stud pattern - it's the MOST common.

A POSSE AD ESSE.
I live in my own little world, but it's okay, they know me here.
COR returned my phone call after I posted here & I had a bit of a chat to him...
I also spoke to a guy from
http://www.volksconversions.com.au/
Who also do a kit.
COR's kit users a vented rear disc @ 1200 ($100 extra for the Ford pattern)
&
Volks conversion users a solid rear disc @ 990.
Both claim there discs are great & both believe the STD fronts are OK just requiring the new rotors with the Ford pattern.
I have read the posts on the modified EA setup but I would hate to have the rear wheels out of balance due to a poorly drilled stud pattern so I think I will pay the extra to have a professional do it.
Good pads in the callipers and shoes in the Type 3 drums will have it pulling up real good because it shouldn't weigh much
I have this on the front of my Beetle:
But it ain't cheap, dammit

VWCOOL..
Where (Did you get them) & why did you go to vented front?
VWconversions is telling me Vented is no advantage for street.
So for the 1 or times a year I may get to play on QLD raceway or Warwick raceway is the extra dollars worth it?
I wanted vented rotor (AU Falcon) and a big calliper (Commodore V8) so I NEVER ran out of brakes.
You're right about 'street' though - you need to drive like a maniac to run out of brakes
But sometimes, I drive like a maniac
Worth it? For me, yes. Because I have never had a car with such good brakes.
here's the whole sordid story!:

I have a complete set of EA rear brakes for sale...calipers rotors backing plates etc.
since its running 4 stud the std type 3 disks up front should do fine, the braking system was unboosted in the type 3s and with a good set of pads they pull up nicely as is, so use your subi's engine and booster line, hook up a bay kombi master cylinder and booster (booster hose was same size on the ea71 as it is on the booster) and you'll have one damn fine set of brakes.

Would the bay Kombi mc/booster fit the type3 unmodified? Is it a remote unit? I think my type 3 standard (re-built) brakes work great, but if all it takes is fitting this Kombi unit then I might consider it.

Modded for VW? How much do you want for them.

no not modified...i bought them cos i was told they are an easy fit to the kombi but not so...but i can see they are an easy conversion on beetle etc
how is the master cylinder connected in the type3s? just poked my head under the car and the booster in the kombi sits up the front, a screw on rod appears to be pushed by the pedal and a booster hose runs from the engine up the back. all i knows is i recon my kombi with correctly adjusted brakes, even with all the camping mods, stopped easier then the type3.

Direct actuation from the pedal via piston rod into mc, no booster on mine. As far as I can find out, no type3's had a vaccuum booster.
Might have to grab a stuffed one to see if I can fit it, the Sabre's pretty tight under there where the mc mounts. I know a Landcruiser remote booster would work, but they sell reco'd at about $800.

Hey Guys
When people refer to good pads - any brands/models etc specifically they are referring to????
Are they a soft compound???
How Much each??
Thinking of trying to get a much better pad and softer to try and improve braking.
Cheers
Brad
green stuff pads for ford
sets trade are $70.00
do they work ? well my 680 missile slams the sump on the round
with a vh 40 booster on ford
vented Ford are a waste of time to many parts in the calipers , pins ect
Im using bendix on the kombi, they have been fantastic. dont know that peter put on the type 3 for me but their real good as well now. bendix are definitely worth it, and i recon they only set me back $30 or $40 for 4 fronts at Bursons.

I've always used Bendix (even on my 86 Corona!) on the advice of my mechanic. Not much more cost-wise than 'standard'.
