I'm doing up a Kit car ATM which has a Subaru EA71 twin Carb engine in it. The car has been sitting for @ 6 years in a shed (No idea if it was started every now & then or not.) The car is hard to start when cold & is back firing etc (Rusty valve seats I believe.)

The carb's where totally blocked in alot of the ports so I'm impressed it started at all before. So I have just rebuilt the carb's cleaning out all the ports & valves etc, replacing all the needles & seats. The carb's have been balance once back on the car.

The car was still hard to start but the biggest issue now is the car will not idle below 2200 RPM. once it drops below this point it just stops like it is not getting fuel. The float levels are correct, the fuel filter & spark plugs are new & timing seems to be OK.

Would the power valves in the carb's be the cause?

Thanks
Darren

Electric fuel pump? Maybe chokes (if manual, stuck on, if auto, bad diaphragm)

Timing out just a couple of degrees maybe? Try a static time to see if the rotor button is lined up correctly. Maybe even a cracked dissy cap.

A POSSE AD ESSE.

I live in my own little world, but it's okay, they know me here.

The carb's are STD Subaru units (No markings at all on them) Repco rebuilt kit was a HT413 (If that helps.
Electric fuel pump (Working.)
Static timing was done with a light blub.
Only one of the 2 Chokes has an earth wire so it is the only one connected.
Carb's where totally disassembled & all ports blown out with compressed air so I don't believe the idle jets are blocked (But I'm going to remove them again just incase.) Is there any other way to check all ports are clean?

The power valve found in the float bowl was the only thing in the carby that looked are bit iffy.

Would a lack of vacuum cause this issue?

The brake boster may have a hole in the diapham as the car has no brakes ATM. ( Next thing on my list to look at replacing. )

Guys thanks for bouncing ideas around here as it is helping..

Cheers..

Thanks guys it lookslike it was a blocked idle jet.
The instruction that came with the rebuilt kits shows the idle jet to be a single piece.
The ones in my car are 2 piece & the second piece was welded into the bottom of the port.
This had to be drilled out so now I need a new one.

Anybody got a phone number of a good Carby shop in brisbane that may be able to identify the jet?

Thanks Bizarre,

I'll try them, but it is going to be hard to make sure it is the correct one. Do they have an email address?
Then I could send them a photo of the needed part.

Cheers

how olds the petrol? this may become a recurring problem if its been sitting for some time. i would be tempted to empty/clean the tank and lines maybe even replace and start fresh.... have filters? after tank? before the pump!? - if there is? lol

I think the tank is rusted so all lines & tank will be looked at well before it is street ready. I have placed filters both sides of the electric fuel pump for that reason. Fuel is newish, but I have only got 5ltrs tops in the tank due to it's possible age.

The carby's where really badly scaled up & the 2 piece idle jet wasn't picked up 1st time we stripped them down. This time (After i get the replacement idle jet) it should run better as the idle port was totally blocked on one carb.

vacum leak will cause the engine to die under a certain rpm... happened to my bus. The vacum brake booster tube popped off and the car would not idle under 2000rpm...

Block off the tube to check.
