Not sure,

But you can start it this way if you haven't got room to clutch start.

Chock in front of and behind L/H front wheel for safety. Put car in top gear, jack up R/H rear wheel and wrap a good length of rope around the tread of tyre in a clockwise direction at least twice, leaving a few feet spare. Turn ignition on, depress accellerator a couple of times, check that automatic choke is engaged, then grab end of rope with both hands and walk briskly away from rear of car. Your dub should now start like a lawn mower. Rope won't tangle as direction of rotation will throw it off the tyre.

If your battery is dead flat or missing completly (generator models only) you can supply power directly to the ignition coil terminals using some wire and a 6v battery from an eveready dolphin type torch. Naturally If car battery is missing then its cable ends should be insulated from each other and car body.

If you need to do this from the left wheel because of limited space, then reverse set up proceedure. In particular when using left wheel, rope must be wrapped in an ANTI-CLOCKWISE direction.

[edit] It's a very old bush mechanics trick. "Cranking power" comes from you pulling the rope. Battery only supplies power to ignition circuit, not starter motor.

When I first came accross this i was assured that 6v applied directly to the coil terminals is just enough to power a 12v ignition circuit if your motor is in good tune. On a 6v system you can get away with being a little out of tune.

I've seen it done by taping a few smaller ordinary torch batteries together eg. 5x 1.2v "AA" batteries = 6v. As soon as engine fires up generator supplies power to ignition circuit (even with car battery missing) and torch battery wires should be removed. Small jumper clips make this easy and you can work throttlle by hand at the same time if it threatens to stall.

Matt.

You can jumpstart a 6V car with a 12V battery - just try to not do it for too long as the 6V batt won't like it much. The starter will, but the batt wont. I've done it a few times myself...

haha, the mini battery trick is awesome matt, never thought of it. how easy are std dubs to roll start? the kombi i could push start by myself and pop at walking pace and have twice popped it in reverse rolling down a driveway backwards within 6m, are they all this easy or was it just the subi engine?

should all be that easy to push start... did it a few times with my oval when we first got it...push started within a few metres.
see.... air and water do mix 😉

Beetles are easy as, In the above example you are just simulating a roll start by using the rope so you would only be getting two complete wheel rotations to start. Thats why you use top gear, wheel rotation multiplies back through the gearbox the least in fourth.(try a rolling start in first gear and see how quick you come to a complete halt without starting, this is because one wheel rotation tries to make several engine rotations and can't cope).

With a wheel off the ground there is bugger all load on engine and it will run ok. When using 4th gear on a rolling start you need to get your foot down on the clutch as soon as it fires up or engine will stall.

A motor in good tune will start in only a few feet at very low rolling speed.

The torch battery thing is really only if your battery is out of car or is so flat it won't even light up the idiot lights on dash. The rope thing can be used any time a roll start isn't practical, like when parked at the bottom of a downhill driveway.

The rope start (I like to call it the "lawnmower start") came about way back when the cars of the day were just too heavy to push start and if you were out bush and there was no other vehicle to jump or tow start you, there was every possibility you could die without rescue.

Matt.

[ Edit ] There used to be a VW accessory (not sure if it was factory) that attatched to the generator pulley so that you can wind a rope around it and start from there, but I would imagine you would have to be built like a gorrilla to use it and not dislocate some part of yourself, as there is nowhere near as much gearing advantage like there is when using rope on wheel. It would probably have been easier than starting with a crank handle off the bottom pulley though.

Have you got 2 people? have someone in the drivers seat with the key in cranking position, then just touch the jumper leads until it starts. Will be OK if no computers in either cars.

it still cracks me up when i hear some of the old blokes around crapping on about how they used to pull start their 36hp beetles in the middle of winter with their belts or ties wrapped around the crank pulley
i'd like to see this in action b4 i beleive it
ive jump started 6v bugs plenty of times off 12volts
the idiot light will flicker and carry on so just d/c as soon as possible

if you just jack up one back wheel and it starts? wont it try and drive forwards... or does the diff just send all the power to the lifted wheel? :duh

One wheel off ground only, Diff sends power to the wheel with least traction.

With a limmited slip diff it's power to wheel with the most traction and you would definately need both wheels off the ground.

Can't see any problem running engine with wheels off the ground. It would only be running at fast idle and only untill you jump in and put it in neutral and drop the jack down.

I've done it many times over the years with no probs.

Will demo at Valla if anyone is interested, or, you could always do the experiment yourself!!

Matt.

[Edit]
DUB74L,
Yeah, those tie & belt stories are a bit far fetched, I cant see where you would wrap it without removing fan belt. It does give me an idea though, for doing an engine out start. If you used something like a belt, (say, a tie down strap) wrapped around flywheel on the flat bit next to the ring gear.

I'll have an engine on the ground in a couple of weeks, I think I'll try it.
