I just replaced My old empi alloy degree crankshaft pulley after breaking it , taking My flexplate off the other side of the crankshaft.... then putting a replacement flexplate back on....
My New EMPI polished alloy crankshaft pulley with degrees
looks like a million dollars.... BUT..
When I did the crankshaft bolt up...
the pulley is pushed onto the engine tinware...
locking the pulley up.....
Any info on how to fix this problem???
The only answer I can see is to have about 5mm machined off the front where the large wave washer goes
so the pulley wouldn't be pushed in so far....

as it seems the crankshaft Bolt and washer, just but up against the end of the crankshaft....

Here is a pic of the pulley...

It sounds like the flash new oil pump cover I've got from Empi with "made in China" proudly displayed on the front that feels like it's made from plasticine.

tassupervee That really hurts doesnt it!

Umm yer thats a bummer.

Yer speaking of crappy pulleys. It was a brand new stock pulley that ended my day at Symmons Plain last Sunday.
The pulley simply fell apart with the grooved bit that actually carries the belt sitting in the bottom of the engine cowl and a thin disk of metal still sitting on the snout of the crank.

Not only that, the blasted remaining disk was so sharp around its circumference that after grabbing it with both hands to rotate the engine when removing it, I managed to slice both my hands badly enough to require treatement from the ambos'......
Some days!

Oh, BTY Lee, dont sprag the front of the engine via the pulley. No doubt poking somthing thru the holes in the pulley and jamming on the case castings.
Fortunately, you only broke a pulley and not the engine case itself.
Always sprag the teeth of the starter ring gear.

Maybe a spacer or washer behind the pulley will keep it off the tinware....
You'd think if they are going to make parts, they would at least make them fit.....
otherwise they are no good.....

Looking like a million dollars.... doesn't count....

Silly question, but does it fit on the other way differently?

quick question
how well does it line up with the genny pulley?
rememeber u want them to be dead level with each other
otherwise it will place alot of strain on the gen and belts wont last u real long
i used a dial gauge to check mine when i fitted my degreed pulley

Lee,
Got one of those and I had to make a spacer out of a crap pulley I had lying around (I've got a lathe...). You put it behind the pulley and you may have to adjust your alt/gen to make it all line up "just so"......

Quote/
I’d measured that I’d need a shim 2mm thick to get the pulleys aligned and off the lower tin.

Yes, Sean,
One of the local VW owners in the next town is a fitter etc and has a lathe...
I may get him to make up a spacer....
unless I can find something in My sheds...

To answer other questions:

The pulley only goes on one way....
the part that goes in the engine has grooves in it to keep the oil in the engine....

The belt was out of alignment by about 15-20mm
which is a lot....

I had to put a couple of shim washers behind the new alternator pulley too... so did My Son....

I had heard [on here I think] of someone with a dud EMPI pulley.....

Sean,
I spent most of the afternoon trying to put the 4 bolts in the torque converter / flexplate...
turning the engine with a spanner on the alternator was very difficult [with the pulley hard up against the tinware]
Usually, I can turn the engine over while still under the car
with a large spanner or the VW wheel brace spanner..
I have the 4 bolts in, but i like to go round and round, tightning them as much as i can....
So, I'll finish them tomorrow...
My old pulley is cracked in a few places... I don't know what I did with My original pulley....
How thick approx was the spacer sean?

Lee,
Only 2mm on mine!!! I did find my alternator wasn't sitting properly, so took 5 mm out of a small part of the casting to stop interfering with the stand.

Is yours 15-20mm??? That is way too much if it is....

Take it off and lay it side by side with your broken one and see how much it's out..

❓!!! Check your crankshaft woodruff key! Make sure your new pulley hasn't rotated it out of it's grrove....

Hi Sean,
I've kept an eye on the woodruff key...
its still there....
the new pulley just pushes in so far then the bolt takes it in the rest of the way....

The belt hopefully may only be out by 5mm...
it was a wild guess before....
as You know belts can't be out at all....
or You have nothing but trouble....

I really want to drive this car....
and everything so far looks good....
I had to make up two new bolts for the torque converter / flexplate...
two weren't too good thread wise....
Sometimes I can cut 20 bolts off and tidy the threads up with no problems...
some days I can;t get One right... lol...
