My friggin nortons has gone spastic, it wont update anymore. Says an update is running but it aint, have googled the problem, none of the 'solutions' work.
Thinking I might do a format C and upgrade to XP from 2000. Get some of the lost speed back, remove nasty resource hogging Oracle and all those uni freeware things I no longer need. Create an account for the missus with no install privelages so these things that just appear might not appear. Its easier with the kid, dad says dont use IE, dont download anything, she does as she is told.
XP Pro is available on ebay from some low prices. Catch is that some of these have had the seal broken, some dont have the CofA. My question is, doesnt XP have to be registered with micro$oft or something? Is buying something where the key has already been used going to land me in a spot of bother?
I don't see any reason why not....
I've used many programs that weren't registered...
with no problems....
When a problem pops up on XP and the box says notify Microsoft /Yes/No...
Just click No.....
I have also bought programs off ebay....
some You download....
some have discs.....

Word of caution - as part of it's normal installation, XP will advise you of any Microsoft updates/patches that they release, which you can then download. One of the recent updates included some software which detects whether you have a valid license key, or not. Essentially they have a database that contains a list of the hacked/cracked licence keys that they are aware of, and compare your key against the list - if there's a match (ie your copy has a cracked licence key) then sorry, no more downloads/patches/updates for you which therefore leaves your system potentially vulnerable.
Not saying that all software bought off e-bay is shonky, but, buyer beware....
well advised...
The trick is not to install that particular patch...
Also there are random key generators that avoid this

Agreed "Kool", but not everyone's PC-literate enough to identify that one patch, which comes bundled with around 10 others (I think), and which has to be specifically deselected from the list of available downloads and can therefore be easily overlooked.
Yeah, there are always ways and means of getting around these types of things
yer turn off automatic updates and choose what updates u want to update that way u cant get caught like alot of people that have illegal copies through the patch that microsoft just released which has sussed out what are legit and what are not!! anyway the nerds have released a patch which counters this microsoft released patch so im all good :P
anyway chris ya should be right
it aint just cool its aircool'd

Time is a great healer. Unless it's a rash, then you're better off with ointment.
Or just buy an Intel Apple and run XP and avoid all the hassles.

If youre gonna buy skank xp off eGay then why not just visit the dark side of the internet and get it from where they are getting it from anyway.
