Howdy All,

Having dramas with my 72 Kombi running an 1800 engine.

Drama:
Kombi flatspots, loses power and splutters when I get her up to 100 km/h. Have to ease off the gas and let her drop to around 60-70 km/h to regain power and stop spluttering. She runs fine when driving around under 80 km/h and I don't have any problems at the top or bottom end of 1st, 2nd or 3rd gears, or the bottom of 4th -only at the top 4th.

I took my baby to my mechanic who found the fuel pump pushrod was worn and replaced it, hoping that this was the cure. It wasn't and now I'm $200 out of pocket and in no better position.

If anyone has any ideas or has experienced this prob before, I would greatly appreciate some advice. At the moment I can't really afford to be spending money on maybe's that don't fix the problem.

I love the site, by the way. Very informative posts and I'm glad that I accidentally stumbled upon it.

sounds like it could be a fuel problem, are you running a electric pump or the mechanical? check for any blockages, in other words put new fuel line in, also maybe get your carbys re-built, with a rebuild kit, cost you around $80 and just do it your self, most of them come with exploded diagrams, so it isnt too hard to do. also check your carb linkage for any loseness this could also cause the problem, but id say most definately its your carbs, but thats just my opinion.take them off and get them checked out if u have to.
cheers

Thanks Nutter,

I was going to check the carby's this morning, but it's pelting down here on the Sunshine (Sometimes) Coast.

The pump is mechanical and my mechanic checked it all over when he replaced the push rod. Carby time is upon me.

I sometimes wish I was back in Melbourne, where I know people who can come and take a look with me. Two heads are better than one, but up here it's just my solitary noggin.

Check your fuel filter and timing. Is your distributor mechanical or is it standard/vacc. advance? Check the timing and advance with a timing light. If your last mechanic didn't fix the problem why are you $200 worse off???Does the car start easily/idle fine??:blah

Check if it has a rev limiter rotor in the distributer.

Had this exact problem with my sons 1800 only a week ago...remove one of the carb linkages and see if it's one carby or both. If it's both it wiil be something common ie fuel pump, filter or blockage. Ours turned out to be some crap stuck in the fuel shut off valve connected to the float. At high speed wasn't getting enough fuel to keep bowl full.
Cleaned out the carb (we did both just to be sure) and changed the fuel filter...problem solved.

possibly could still be carbys as when driving in lower gears a shifting at say 3000 revs u might not notice but then in 4th driving aty 3500 revs constantly the engine could be starving for fuel.

where are u on the coast?

u could try the fella at buderim....forgotten his name but hes a nice guy.

i dont know if billy flock is still trading but he knows his stuff too and is in caloundra.

theres also a place at warana who i wasnt very impressed with.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

Think I may have narrowed it down to the left carby, thanks to Stanley's advice. Have some more testing to do before I rip it off though. How many $$ will I be looking at for a Carby Rebuild kit for a PDSIT?

Regarding Anthiron's post, I went to the guy at Warana, seemed good to me, but then again he didn't fix my prob. Have been to him once before (I just moved up here a few months ago) and he seemed ok then.

Yeah after what Stanley said I'll take back what I said - it could be the carbs; clean them both out.

I was thinking more ignition

something else to look out for is the fuel pump rod wearing and not giving the correct flow. You wont notice it until you travel at high speed and the pump can't keep up. You won't notice it thru the gears because your not at that rev for long enough. This is a bit of a long shot if all else fails.

No worries VWCOOL, the more ideas, the better from where I'm sitting.

Thanks for your advice Stanley. Actually had the push rod replaced (it was worn about 3mm short) earlier in the week by my mechanic- he thought that it was causing the problem too. Unfortunately, it wasn't the culprit, but may have caused probs soon anyway. Checked the Carby suggestion and ran smoothly with only the right attached, but rough on the left. Thanks

I don't have an inspection hole under my bed and have a big head, so thoroughly checking them insitu is a bit tough. Would you recommend pulling the left/both carbys and seeing if they need rebuilding?

It seems like crud is caught in one of the float needle valves, unfortunately to check them the carbies have to come off and the tops removed. the float needle valves are brass and you need a 14mm thin walled socket to remove them. there could also be crud in the fuel lines so unless they are new replace them, you should also replace or put in a new fuel filter between the tank and the fuel pump. you can get the parts from mick motors in brisbane phone
