Hi all,

I'm in the process of getting old Ratty (my '63 Beetle) ready for the trip to Valla. I decided to fit a set of gauges (oil temp and oil pressure) just so I can keep a closer eye on what is going on 'back there'. The oil pressure gauge came with a sender - so no problems there, but I need a sender for the temp gauge.

I have been told that you can get a temp sender that will screw into the sump plate (replaces the sump plug), and I have had several people offer me second hand units, but no one has managed to produce one yet and time is now running short.

Does anyone use these senders in their vehicles? If so, where did you get it and is there any chance you would have the (VDO) part number of the sender. Also, what temp range does your gauge cover (just so I can make sure it's the same as mine)?

I have asked RIPCO and Driftbarn but they just look at me strange and mumble something about no records of that part number/not suitable for use in a VW/or something and I'm tired of dealing with idiots :bounce

Any assistance at all would be great!

Thanks

Give Vintage a call on 02-9789-1777 they have the sender units on the shelf and will post
Best off drill the engine case to fit it

From memory the gauge is around 0 to 120 degrees C
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

you can also get a sender that reolaces your dipstick. I run one of these (VDO) and have never had a problem.

This is the type of sender that my Brother uses in his '65 Westfalia - you wouldn't have a part number would you?

Hi Ross ,the spare one i have in my hand says 150deg C this needs to match with your guage ,i also have a 120 i think on the next flat of the hex it says 2.98 then 801/12/2 then germany:beer:beer:beer
Don't argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference.

According to the VDO catalogue, the 0-120C is a water temp gauge, 0-150C is oil temp gauge. If your oil ever got to over 120C, I think you'd have problems, so the 0-120C should work fine. I have one. Just make sure you match the sender range to the gauge range.

I have an old gauge, 6 volt, marked in deg F - if I do a quick conversion from F to C the gauge is marked to 122 deg C - so therefore the 0-120 deg C sender should do the job just fine. Do you have the VDO catalogue or is it available on line - I really need to get a part number for the sender before I go into battle to try to get one of the parts suppliers to order one for me 😀

Thanks for your help.

I have one, but i don't know how to post the relevant page. I downloaded it form the VDO website. I emailed customer service at VDO gave them the description of my gauge and asked them which sender I should use. They actually answered with a part no!

ring Mick motors or Custom off road mate, I have got the sender from both of them.

The dipstick ones are hard to get now, low demand. The sump plug ones are vunerable. I tapped the case for mine, I have also fitted it into the blanking plate for the type 3 dipstick in the t1 kombi

To calibrate whatever sender you use, dunk in boiling water and that is 100 deg, work it out from there as the gauges are not often accurate to the actual temp, more like a comparison to itself...

Luck mate,

kkk

I have a 12 v one if you need (gauge that is)

be real careful screwing one into the sump plug hole
i did that first time around and found next oil change that the sender had sqaushed the bottom of the strainer up over the oil pick up line
it was just the typical sender u see wasnt longer than normal but had hit the strainer

i wondered why my oil pressure dropped abit after i installed it

Thanks for all your info - I'll stop wasting time with the local suppliers and get one from the Guys in Brisbane.

These are the same as the gauges that I have just fitted (except my temp gauge only goes to 250 deg F - the gauges in these pics are fitted to my brothers '65 Westy. Same face as the early VW speedo - they look great!
