Evenin' All,
My type 3 gearbox is whinning louder than my boss on deadline day! It changes smooth enough and even the clutch feels ok but the bearing noise is become ...... um...... unbearable. I've asked a local vw mech and he reckons about $1500 to rebuild the box with new bearings which is not really in the budget (especially I only paid a grand for the car!). What would a recondition box cost? Who would folk recommend for a rebuild? I'm in Canberra, but at a push I'd take the box out (is this hard?) and take it to Sydney.
Cheers
Grant
if the noise is similar in all gears then it is usually the front main drive shaft bearing which should cost betwen $250 to $500 to replace if you deliver the box. gearbox person from earlier post (My auto box was rebuilt by Bruce Geddes Automotive at Peakhurst. They have been a VW specialist since 1966, and also specialise in automatic transmissions. Give them a ring - 02 9533 3040.)
there is a guy called nick i think maybe lyle street fyshwick he has many many vw's with lots of parts for sale contact the canberra vw club for local knowledge
to remove a motor and gearbox requires a certain amount of vw knowledge if its your first time best to have a mechanically minded friend and a good vw manual on hand.
Thanks Kombidaze, I'll try and get some local contact happening. The whinning is constant through all gears so I reckon you're on the money. Hopefully I can get out of it without having to sell a kidney..........
Is it swing axle or IRS? I am selling a good swing axle type 3 box for only $150
U2U if I can help.
