Hi people. I am looking at buying a Type 3 squareback (What I wanted from the start) The current owner says that he has been told it may have burnt out valves. The mechanic I trust says it would be around $1800 to do the heads. The car also has faded paint work, reasonable amount of rust around the Right hand rear side window and in both top corners of the roof. At the rear around and above the rain channel. (Not through the metal) It's a 72 1500 4spd.

NB: I forgot that it looks like there has been some rust damage in the past under the front right hand guard (Possibly body strengthening area)
He wants $1500 for it but I know I wont pay that much I just want to know what you guys think?
I have to do something real soon as the LHF strut tower has cracked on the inside of my73 super.

PS If anyone knows someone in SA selling a running VW for around $1500 let me know 🙂 Type1 or Type3

I did have a look at that one before posting. Unfortunatly I can't just get in and drive it. ( work on the other side of the city and have to have transport as I work 12 hour shifts) . But ultimatly I realy want a wagon or stick with a late type 1

Check on caresales etc...for the price your mechanic has told you for the heads, you could buy a whole car, running with less rust issues for that amount of $$$$ than what you are buying.Rust in the roof aint great...repairable but not great.....i would be "pooling" my $$$$ because $1500 purchase price plus the $1800 for the heads will get you a GOOD square with less issues. Just my 2 cents...
P.s. I like all type 3's so i'm not being anti type 3....but $3500/$4000 will get you a damn GOOD one..

If a mechanic I trusted told me that price for just doing the heads I'd never trust him again!!! Find another one!! You could build quite a reliable re-conditioned motor including new bearings, cyls/pistons etc for that price.

Strange a 72 with a 1500.New heads would only cost about $250 each.Sounds for the asking price is too high in it's condition.Early shape maybe.

The 1800 was for all parts and labour to do the job. The reason I trust these guys is that I took my Super to a VW specialist down the road as soon as I got it to give it a major service and safety inspection. He says he went over the car and found that the compression was down to 80-95 psi and that I had a cross threaded spark plug. Then went on that he could rebuild the motor for three grand and I should get it done soon. He failed to find the cracked tower, non functioning reverse lights and leaking brake hoses. (I later found that he did not properly tighten the rear brake drum) I then took it to this specialist and for some reason the compression ratios were backl up to 100 with only one at 97psi. Also no sign of the cross threaded plug. The service I paid two hundred dollars for at the other place was only 125 here as well.

Owning a VW involves learning about them as well. Do your own services and save a bundle. The engines would have to be the simplest of near any to work on.

And now a few hours sleep and off to Nambucca!!

Lol I would work on the car. I have no where under cover, and no time. When I am not at work my wife works so I have two small children to look after and one is still that little he needs to be watched all the time. Mind you I have worked on the electrics and a few simple bits on the motor (Carby mods and rebuilds mostly). I have buillt a couple of holdens up from bare shells in the past but unfortunatly I must now rely on someone who can do the job right in a short time and clean dirt free conditions

I decided on the one I first saw. I talked the guy down to $800 and he could keep the radio and speakers. There was a sticker on the back of the car from the mechanic who has been doing my beetle. Seems the last owner had the car given a real good going over at the end of 2005 (9000ks on speedo) the compression in all cylinders was 135psi. The only faults they had listed was one spark plug hole fairly stripped and that the headlight insides were rusted. I also talked to the guys at work and now have the rust repairs covered.
I picked it up tonight and it is still running like a pig when it is not being pushed or at idle. Seems like ignition or fuel problem to me. Anyway I found a whole heap of recipts in the car. This thing has had everything inspected and replaced as soon as there was a problem. Then the bonus apparently a few years ago the motor was replaced with a 1700, not sure what real size this would have been as I havent seen it anyware, but hey a reco motor, and extractors and the car isn't all that bad. I am as happy as a pig in chocy factory
