In the process of trying to get the old girl on the road again and with some help from some slightly more mechanically minded friends last weekend, found out the generator and possibly the regulator have 'issues'. Attempting to remove the generator so auto-elec friend can bench test it with the regulator (slightly easier to remove), but kinda stuck at the moment.
Following the Haynes manual for the removal of the generator, I've got the first few steps done fine (removal of fan belt, loosening of strap that holds the thing down etc).
Next step simply informs me to "remove the four bolts holding the fan cover plates to the fan housing" - now, I get what I'm meant to be doing here, however of the 4 bolts, 1 is easily accessible, 2 are in tight spots but should be OK to get to, the fourth... (the lower passenger side) which is hidden behind the inlet manifold.
(see pic)
The manual informs me that this should be possible without removing the engine, however I'm not really seeing how this is possible.
Is it really just a damn tight fit, or should I be removing the inlet manifold to get to this fourth bolt?
TIA.

You can loosen the whole fan shroud and lift it slightly. on either side of the shroud there is 10mm bolts securing it to the cylinder tinware, just above the sparkplug holes on either side. you should also remove the dog house from the rear of the shroud on the left side, there is the cover and the duct. Both have 10mm bolts, remove the cover first, then feel around and you will feel the bolt for the duct. Then you should be able to lift the shroud up enough to get to the bold securing the fan and generator. It will take some effort to remove the fan/generator assembly from the housing due to size and position. The fan attatched to the generator is quite deep, and needs to be clear of the housing before you can lift up the generator. This may also require removal of the inlet manifold and caby to give you more room to move. I may be easier to remove the engine (about 30 mins) and then remove the fanshroud, fan/generatory assembly as a whole unit.
Cheers for the advice. I'll give it a go!
Managed to get the pesky fourth bolt out by just working slowly at it and getting rather greasy from the inlet manifold. Now I'm supposedly meant to be able to lift the fan housing up, yet even with the decklid removed I can't see how this is possible as theres only about 1" max I can lift it up before they hit the decklid mounts. I reckon this manuals having a lend of me if this is really meant to be possible without removing the engine from the car first.
🙁
Ah well. Might just have to remove the engine!
i find it quicker dropping the engine....

You need to take the hinge/body mounts off too

Hi
As VWcool said remove the hing hanger, I find that ist best to remove the 2 rerar bolts from the hinge hanger and slighlty loosen its front bolt, that way you can swing it back into place without upsetting the decklid alignment.
Another way is to undo the 36 mm nut on the fan and leave the fan in place as you remove the generator, these are usually not that tight but I have struck some tight ones in the past.
