Just finished gapping my piston rings for the 1640 turbo and I have a stupid question.

The question relates to the oil ring...the ones I pulled out were a 1 piece ring, however the new ones I have are the 3 piece type (two wipers and an expander ring). two questions...

Are these the right ones to use (purchased from vw shop)

The gap for oil ring is .010"- .016", however these will be more than .016" when installed is this ok or do I have the wrong ones.

TIA

Stanley.

That is no worries Andrew.
The rails are allowed (and normally have) a heap of end gap.
The tollerance listed is for the one piece type.
I normally fit the rail gaps opposite, and the expander up.

I prefer what you have.
Apparently they do a better job with less friction.
But I like them cause they are easy to fit!

You're right...they do go on easy. Now all I need is a ring compressor that allows me get it back off with the barrel on, (unlike the one I bought)........

Take the piston off the con rod and use your ring compressor to install the piston into the barrel, then reinstall the barrel/piston onto the con rod

yeah the 3 piece oil scrapers are better than the single ring oil scrapers... just make sure you space the ring gaps around the piston and not all lined up

you can use a bit of thin sheet metal cut into a strap and hold it with some pliers to compress the rings
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

thanks...I'll have to try that. Already got the pistons on.
Thinking about it now though, it would easier to put the pisons in the barrels and then put the pins through. Keep that in mind for next time. I'm sure this won't be the last time they see the light of day.
