Who's got a T4 Transporter? What are your thoughts on them? Is the 2.5 petrol strong enough or is the TDI a better a unit - or the V6 for that matter?

hey.. yep ive a 98 SWB 2.4l diesel non-turbo.. great bus if you can find one with low klms and a non-noisey g/box (man) as most have a heap of miles and need tlc..
some of the members here have the tdi model but i couldnt find one so thats why i ended up with the non-turbo..
i am very happy with it just the same..
good luck on your hunt..
cheers paul

I had a number of T4 transporters in both the 2l & 2.5l petrol engines.

The 5 bangers were great to drive and tow my bug with.

Sat on 110 easily towing my Beetle on a duel axle car trailer and came up the Toowoomba range in 2nd gear @60K's half throttle!

Had a friend with the T4 Turbo diesel 2.5 and he just loved it,
blew me away on the hills.

The T4's are great to drive and are built very well.! Haven't driven the T5 yet but the new Turbo diesel with 128 kw and 400n/m of torque would be the one I would buy next!

my brother in law has a 2L van

OK - but not brilliant in power.

Richard had a 2.5L and that thing rocked.

The only thing i have against them is the lack of space.
I need the 7 seats. When you have this arrangement you have bugger all space left for storeage. In that department a T3 wins hands down.
In fact ALL the new vans have bugger all space when the seats are in.

I have though about doing a swap, but for the miles i do i will keep the T3 for now.

Thanks for the replies so far. How fuel econimical are they - esp the 2.5 petrol or diesel? What about longevity on the motors? Has anyone had to rebuild one that has got say 150,000kms on it? Or if not - what sort of life expectancy is there?

i have a caravelle petrol 2.5 manual, they go pretty well and are nice to drive.
used to drive t4 turbo diesels at work, they do go better than the petrol and go further on a tank. i get about 650 - 700 Km out of 80 L tank in the petrol.

dunno about converted transporters, but the caravelle has heaps of space for luggage etc with all 8 seats in.

we now have t5 turbo diesels 128 kw at work and they fly, and really nice to drive. a really big step up from the t4, not that the t4 is bad though. the t5 is just truly amazing.
