In New South Wales-

Can you rego your vehicle with either Euro (Clear) or Smoked indicator and tail lights.
I do know the tail lights always must have a red reflector but not sure on the others.

Don't want to fork the dollars just to give Ins Plod a reason to book me.

I have asked this before but recieved no reply. Must be a hard one?

If the lens's design is not as per ADR's current when vehicle was manufactured, then they would have reason to justify a defect notice.

You can get a defect for a faded lens, so a clear one would justify defect. Likewise a smoked one would have less illumination.

If the lens you buy complies with ADR's then it would be fine. I know you could fit coloured globes to the clear ones, and brighter globes to the smoked ones, but you have to prove they comply with ADR's still???

Nah.... the answer is just no.

Guaranteed most of the "normal / legal" ones wont have the right ADR stamp either

Some of those altessa type lights are nice...
I love a good light.... :P:P

Hi Bronze,

I see many beetles at the shows with clear, smoked or the ALL red US tail lamps...

ALL Illegal in Australia... I believe...

I don't know how they get away with it....

and Yes, I think our lights are supposed to have the correct numbers on them... but these days,
some don't have any numbers at all...
and the genuine VW made ones from South America
aren't too good either...
some have the VW symbol and part number...

but only Hella make the good ones....

cheers

Thanks all for your input. I appreciate your time and response.

Bugger. It would have looked good too. I'll order a couple of hellas and some minor pinstriping and painted surrounds will have to do.

I rather play it by the book. The oversize guards, tyres and flame spitting exhausts are enough without defect lights as well.

Thanks again.

these are all illegal, but i have a feeling with the euro lens invasion, its quickly going to be added to the pile of illegalities that taping television and radio belong to... its illegal, but everyone is doing it, and its just too huge to enforce the law

its also illegal to hang anything from your rear view mirror, but then again how many of us have fluffy dice, elvis, or air fresheners blocking the screen?

ADR 6, introduced in 1973, details the optical requirements for direction signalling lamps. All lamps must be stamped as complying with this ADR. So it is not good enough that you have an amber globe, the whole lamp has to have been tested for compliance. But if your car is earlier than 1973, as I understand it, there are no rules. Check the compliance plate to see what ADRs your car are supposed to comply with.

I would just put them on with appropriately coloured bulbs or LEDs installed, you can always go back to originals if you get pulled up.

How many police officers would actually spot the difference?
My taillights on Vera are 100% ILLEGAL, but I've been pulled over numerous times and they've never mentioned them.

On Suzie (My '72 Super) I intend to use these (Well the smoked version) because of the style.

Probably not exactly legal either.
So all in all it's whether or not you are game enough.

I've been told the cheap Large tail lamps are very dim at night compared to the real Hella units...

If someone runs into the back of you, You will know why.

You could put some silver foil as reflectors in them...

although the clear ones, would have to be a bit bright
seeing they are clear....

The clear lenses don't look right to Me...
too modern... or is that the look...??

cheers

I was pulled over for RBT & Licence checks etc but never booked for defects.
Take a look at my fathers Pontirat, lots of things that look illegal (But aren't)
and he's pulled over very rarely for the same reasons as me, as well as the cops just wanting to take pictures for their mates! So no I don't agree that police officers are harder on older cars.

Oh, and no I've never been told to do anything (IE Bumpers) to my car.

I got pulled over cos one of my headlights on my 73 super was pointing too high up. I had no bumpers on at the time and was told to put bumpers on. The cop told me that in Victoria a car must have at least a rear bumper.... and here is the silly part -if you have a rear bumper by law a front bumper must also be installed. I asked about nudge bars and was told NO!

Hijacks fine with me.

I'm thinking I'll go with the clear lens' on the front and stick with the originals on the rear. My models 71 so I guess I'm ok to do whatever then but I don't know enough to argue my way out of it. I will be going for a blue slip and just don't want to wait another week for two lenses to arrive for rego. Once I've been around a bit and the police have seen it a few times I may decide to push my luch a little more and swap to rear euros.

I can't seem to find the smoked or euro lenses for my model any more. I did find them 6 months ago but there not available anymore by the looks. Plenty of people are selling the later elephant feet euro's like DUB74L's got / had. I was planning on going down the LED road but not for indicators as I don't want the electrical hassles they cause with the flasher unit.

I'm going to see the engineer this afternoon so I'll see what his take is on it. I'm still two to three weeks away from rego and just in the process of finding parts, sorting quotes and ordering.

Business must be good because I have sent out 5 requests for quotes to VW business for lights, rubbers and accessories and only recieved two replies.

My New Lenses [bought a few years ago] have the VW part number on them...
thats it...??

Maybe only Hella lenses are legal?
thats if the numbers are still being put on them...
so, if the lenses come from the US, maybe US Design rule numbers??

or Brazillian or Mexican ... :P:o:P:o:P

Lucky I still have the original tail lamp lenses in the shed...
