Hey guys,
When accelerating in the 58 what happens is the the car spultters and nearly dies, it sounds like it's only running on 1 or 2 cylinders but yet it idles fine. Thought it mite be the acclerator pump but i dunno cause sounds like 2 of the cylinders still work. I also noticed that the coil is sparking against itself, like a spark jumps up the trunk sorta thing.
Any other theorys. Thought i mite clean the carby as well incase its dirt.
Cheers
Think you might want to replace the coil as a starting point. You can check the accelerator pump by looking down the carb and pulling the throttle lever and seeing if a squirt of fuel comes out of the accelerator jet.
Ain't nothin' like the wind in your hair.
Yes,
a short circuiting coil isn't good...
Pull the lead out of the centre of the coil, and Wipe the coil and leads over with WD40 or Metholated spirits etc..
to clean them..l...
worth a try... also do the inside of the distributor cap too
Yes, as PurpleT3 said,
it is the accelerator pump...
without this working some cars cannot be driven...
but they idle just fine...
and some can be revved Ok, but still it makes it hard to drive them.....
I couldn't get My car out of the garage with the accelerator pump not working...
The accelerator pump has a diaphram, which may need replacing...
also the solex accelerator pump has a ball bearing valve which makes it work...
if this is clogged up, its very hard to clean..
I have 2 or 3 carbies with this problem...
You can't get at the ball valves...
Best of Luck

the small arm with a spring on it on the LHS under the carby bowl [in the pic]
is the accelerator pump...
You can see the accelerator pump ballbearing valve on the RHS...
As purpleT3 said, You look down the carby throat, with the auto choke off or hot [if it has one]
The Jet is the small arm sticking out in the centre of the carby...
Sometimes these jets can fall out...
they don't do much harm as they are copper [soft]
best of luck

Kool thanx for that. I took it for a drive just b4 down the farm and once we got outta 1st she just purred along, plus a lil bit of sliding round corners so i duno if it is the accelerator pump.
Mite just be dirt, however when i was driving the air filter came off and it looks like it sucked up alot of dirt so the carbys gonna need a clean neways lol 😂
Well, if You can drive it like that,
its NOT the accelerator pump
The other problem.. DUST
it can kill an engine very fast...
Without an air cleaner...
It probably will have little effect on the carby...
but the dust goes into the engine...
One of the most important parts of an engine in Dusty conditions...
Dust can also clog up an air cleaner very fast...

I'd be thinking coil myself... I had a similar issue with my VN Commodore... idled fine but at speed it would intermittentantly drop two or 3 cylinders... started off as just a bit of a miss on acceleration and just got worse until the car was almost undrivable. replacing the coil pack fixed it... 😎
A mate had a similar issue too with his big V8 Merc 530... it would idle just fine but as soon as the engine was put under load it would just conk out. Again, coil was at fault... we only realised it when the bloody thing exploded and blew putrid smelling fuckhot oil out one end all over the rocker cover... :duh

Try ignition, perhaps your advance isn't working. Check your advance mechanisms and also your points. Are all of the vacuum pipes correctly connected?
Clean your plugs, points and rotor, and also give your carby the old hand over the throat trick to clean her out.

wouldn't be an early type 1200 engine would it? cause if its an old 28 PIC carb, it won't have a vacuum advance, let along an auto choke :o!
If engine number less than 5,000,002 then urs is an early 1200 engine.

So yes, check your advance!
And for that other remark, I won't even need to reply to it because it in itself is contradictory.

Sorry Schmoburger, that remark is disgusting and you should have really kept it to yourself?
What was it you used to say? "Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one, just some of them stink"?
Keep it to youself mate, i love all VW's big and small, after all they played a part in keeping Volkswagen alive for so long!
Enough of that crap and back to the topic!
Sorry i can't help you Gerbie, except maybe control the dribble that is hi-jacking your thread? Bonus is, you get a free bump

Hehe, thats 2 and counting ay chris? :P
Oh btw it is still a 6v, so does that mean its a 6v coil? i am running a 12v battery though.
Cheers
well theres prblem #1
u'll nuke that coil in no time not to mention all otherthings like warning lights, choke unit regulator etc
an engine thats been sitting round as long as that one shouldnt be just fired up and flogged around the paddok
atleast check the tappets and change the oil
-Joel
Ah well, i wasnt told that (still new to VW's) was told the lights in the dash were changed to 12v (thats y they havnt gone) so was told that the battery wud be fine.
So is that my problem?
I duno if it is a 12v or 6c coil btw, how do i check?
usually has in indentation on the body of the coil saying 12v or 6 v...
On the top perhaps?

yea looked for that, however you cant make anything out on this coil..
clean it up with sandpaper or wd40/degreaser and a scrub brush... (wd40 dissolves rust)

Kool, thanx will try that

Your best bet would just be to change the coil to a 12v to start of with.
Then check the regulator voltage, and from what I can see it looks like it may be a 12V, and also your choke etc... Just check these things or else!

Is changing a coil to to 12v just bolting on a 12v coil?
I could always disconnect the choke wire for now to avoid ruining that cudnt I? just give it a few pumps to start it cold?
Yeah pretty much man, but I mean check your choke too see how much it's been converted to 12V...
You understand?
