Tappet noise how do you adjust them

My engine 1500 70 beetle is making some god awful noises I thought It may have been bearings but on the way home the other day from the 50s fair I gave the beetle a good run home when I hopped off the freeway the noise stopped.
It sounds like a bearing or loud tappet noise so if the noise goes away after a hard run what do you think it could be?
How do you adjust VW rockers I will give that a go till I get another engine sorted.
Cheers

It sounded like a bearing on Sunday, I didn't want to say anything as I thought I may have offended.

If you run chromoly pushrods or fast rate cam the valve train can be noisey if the engine is running hot.
But some times a loose gudgeon bush will produce the sound you decribe,
as it sluces back and forth in the eye of the rod.
The bush being loose in the eye of the rod will come out until it hits the piston and then
move back into place, until it breaks up and falls out.
Any unsavoury noise needs immediate attention, so that it doesn't create a hole.

Yes,
A good mechanic can tell You what the noise is...

sounds like an engine overhaul is needed..

The tappets should be adjusted every 6,000 miles
when the engine is dead cold....

some people do them every 12,000 miles...

but if they are done every 6,000 miles, at least You know a valve isn't going to drop into the cylinder....

To know if there is any damage done to Your engine case
it would have to be stripped down and examined...
which costs money...

or get another engine .. New or used or overhauled..

If it was a big end knock then Your engine Case could be
reused...
but if the engine is still being used, a failure could occur at any time...

A mechanic needs to listen to it.. a VW mechanic..

Best of Luck

Another possibility (long shot, but I've seen it happen) - occasionally you might have the edge break off of a cam follower...... the sharp edge produced then wears the cam lobe down to the point where the follower 'bounces' on and off the lobe.......

But like I said very unlikely. Suprised hell out of us when we pulled that motor down, thats for sure....

There is a great procedure for adjusting the valves documented in John Muir's book How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive - highly recommended.
