I've got one and use it to weld up my Superbeetle. Parts are easy to replace from a welding store.

You need to get one that uses GAS. I have a SIP gas/gasless and it is OK for light stuff.

Gasless is ok for small jobs around the car and home though and I've even used one of these to cut and shut a car before. The wire has a flux core to help with oxidation etc instead of using inert gas.(That's right isn't it?)
Any professional would go for a gas setup but I'd rather have a $300 gasless mig than nothing at all!
Also considering that one for $299 at "a well known auto store" Chris 😂

i`ve got a gas/gasless and ive used it many of times on both my beetles,as people have stated gas welding is better quality etc but not everybody can afford to pay for the hiring of gas bottles to sit in the shed yr in /yr out so yes Chris is good for what you want:thumb:

I have to say nay. Gasless welders are for building gates and dog kennels in my opinion. I am fussy and expect quality welds and will blame the equipment if it is not right for the job. I combine oxy, TIG and MIG to get the results I need, but it is all possible with just an oxy or a MIG. (You can shrink metal with a MIG too)

It is your decision, and good on you for giving it a go. It seems you are not expecting too much in the way of quality. I will ignore any whinges later on if they are heard.

A mate of mine has an expensive gas/gasless mig and I've used it in both configerations and with gas there is no comparision - easy clean welds without it's an absolute bitch. It still does the job mind just nowhere near as good.

cheers guys.

Got my first welder today, i mean, people have claimed to be able to fix there car bodies with no worries with arc welders, yet others say its almost impossible... got the gasless MIG, its just gonna be a game of patience and practicing technique. and it should work out. Anything is possible, if it welds, its better than me bogging it up...

I don't know why they brand MIG welders as gas/gasless. Any MIG that is set up to use gas can also run flux cored (gasless) wire. All you do is turn the gas off. A welder that has no provision for gas is simply a "wire feed" welder.

The gasless can produce pretty good results if you use enough voltage. A key point to welding panels nicely (and strongly) is to butt weld (never lap weld on panels) in short bursts. as soon as you feel the steel can't take any more on the little spot you're welding on and it looks like it's going to blow through, stop and weld a spot somewhere else. This way, you don't get things too hot (distortion) and you'll get a decent join. Make sure though that you get it nicely melted at each spot you tack. Another tip is, (wearing gloves) support the torch tip with a finger or two whilst resting your hand against the panel. This makes for much easier and more consistant starts.

Next you might want to get yourself an automatic helmet... But make sure it's a good one, like a SpeedGlas.

Definetely get yourself an auto helmet.... they are down to less than $100 bux, and take it from someone with welding flash (permanent fuzzy spots in your vision), its a great investment.

On fluxcore MIG welding..... its horses for courses, and to a certain extent technique counts for an awful lot too - like for eg if I tried to oxy weld car panels I would put so much heat in it would warp everything and have a very bad finish, and I would have to swear alot. Whereas I've happily done serious rust repairs (A pillar replacements, wheel arch replacements, window sill replacements etc etc) with a $900 Lincoln Electric MIG (I think the equivalent machine is about $1200 now).

The only issue is when you dont have the money to afford a MIG that runs gas.... because they dont get much cheaper than $800 or so I think..... and in your case, the $300 gasless / fluxcore MIG is a million times better for car body work than a MMAW (manual metal arc welder, or stick welder).

Alot of pressure vessel fabricators and piping spool manufacturers use industrial size fluxcore MIG welders - but for them its a cost / speed relationship. Fluxcore welds (when performed correctly) can comply with most any pipe spec / welding code (at least in mild steel that is) you would care to think of.

Just my 2c anyways. I dont even own a welder of any sort, so Chris is ahead of me there ! (I have to steal my fathers when I need one....)

Chris, the cheapo auto helmets will save you a lot of flashes and make welding a lot more enjoyable (and easier). If you plan to do a lot though, it's worth investing in a better helmet eventually. I've done a bit of heavy fabrication in industry, so I consider the SpeedGlas 9000 that I have to be a worthwhile investment in the health of my eyes. And my lungs, as it has a decent breathing duct towards the rear. What most people don't realise is that you need the correct filter number (darkness) for the type of arc you're watching, which is impossible to guarantee with the cheaper adjustable helmets and the speed that they darken is not quite as fast as the more expensive ones. It'll be something to save up for if you really get into welding (you'll need to save, mine cost $680, and that was a few years ago. The model I bought is still the current top model even now).

Have fun welding and keep in mind, penetration is what you want (mind out of the gutter for a sec please). Your welds can "look" like cockie shit and still be stronger than someone elses "neat" welds. As long as it bights in with a good "heat affected zone" around the weld and you can see the weld on the reverse side when you're done... And don't worry about blowing holes, while you've got the welder in your hands just weld them up... LOL

i`m must be lucky as i borrow a speed glass 9000 from work,:thumb and the gasless migs run on reversed polarity compared to when using gas ,but hey thats another thing completely, we now want to see some results chris😎
