Yes Rhys,
I have had those in My Beetles and type 3 over the years
very good lights
but
prone to stones in the country...

One good thing is, cracking the glass doesn't stop the light from working...

I now use the Hella semi sealed beams..
these have a flat glass on them,
and don't seem to be cracked so easily..

I fit Hella or Narva QH plus 50 - 55/60w bulbs
they are 50% brighter on low beam and 30% brighter on high beam... but same wattage...

they don't just bolt in as a replacement... for Hella H/L
they need to be bolted to a headlamp bracket first from an early Ford... or others..
unless You are replacing the late model BOSCH flat glass headlamps as on the 76 Beetle
they only had one screw.. the one that holds the rim on..
and the rim was chromed plastic...
the headlamp bolts to the two small metal clips already in the VWs headlamps buckets...
Sealed beams were used in the USA VWs...

The Hella number is correct 1056
I just checked the box
Not sure what number the semi sealed beams are

Cheers

LEE

Hella 1058 are the semi sealed ones.... I use...

Local price was around $65 each last time I checked..
XD12-60/55 are the bulbs.. also very common..

178mm is 7 inches - very common...

Most early cars have 7 inch Single round headlamps...

Hella 1075 is another sealed beam 75/50 watts

Hella 1058 are semi sealed beams with the nearly flat glass
I just found you can also get 1058HD
with hardened glass...

cheers

Hi

Im running the same as Lee in my 1300 twinny, they work really well. I used Mini buckets to hold them and then used the stock chrome rings to cover up all the adjusting screws etc.

Here is a pic of a headlamp
sealed beam or semi sealed beam unit
and the headlamp bucket bracket

but if Your lenses are OK
then bulbs are all You need

The bulbs in Hella & Bosch headlamps are usually
Ones with the large round centre peice on them
the common European fitting.

where more common QH bulbs have three metal locaters
that look like a Y

Hi

The VW headlamp bulbs use a special base, its round, as Lee said the H4 units use a buld with a Y shape base, these are much more common.

I have them in my 1300 twinny.

After looking at Your driving lamps Steve,

I might take My small Bosch driving lamps off and put My
large Hella driving lamps on....

Yours do look good....

Hi Lee

They are Cibie Super Ocsars on my car. Because of work commitments I had to leave for Valla at 2 pm, so that meant a bit of driving in the dark on highway. We usually leave around 4 am, so by the time we get off the F3 its daylight and you dont need a good highbeam on the F3.

I had to go to a bit of trouble to stop them vibrating, I can take pictures of the bracket if you like.

Hi Steve
The top of My bumper brackets have a piece of steel welded into the triangle at the top with holes drilled in them for lights.
thats where My Bosch lights are located but larger lamps will cover the headlamps slightly so I was thinging of putting a piece of hollow 3 inch x 1 inch rectangular tube across from one side to the other and mount the larger lamps on the tube...
My Son has a welders ticket so He could weld it...

but I wouldn't mind looking at Your brackets. Steve

I did some Rallying years ago in a Galant and I had two hella Rallye 2000 and two Hella 1000 lamps
I gave one of the Rallye 2000 with the car when I sold it but still have the others.
I had to use top brackets on the Large lamps on the Galant to stop them vibrating and pulling the rivets thru the base....
Only good part, is I don't normally drive on rough roads in My beetle....

and I know the Oscars and Super Oscars....
something I couldn't afford... lol...
I did have Cibie headlamps in the Galant..
they had a spot light built into the tops of the headlamps
I should have kept them.... but they were 5 3/4" lights

Steve,
I haven't actually used My driving lamps on MY beetle
I have vinyl [foam] covers on them and haven't taken them off...
My headlamps are really good and I've only been 30kms down the highway at night...
although You can hit a Kangaroo within 2-3 kms out of Scone... at night..
so I really should be using them...

i had a set of 6" narvas on my first superbug
altho by the time igot the headlights up to scratch i found they made no difference anyway
but to give them a solid mount i welded a piece of angle onto my bumper brackets and they didnt move at all
i knew the wouldnt be solid enuff bolted stright to the bumper
i've got one on my Lbug atm coz it was a good spot to mount my CDMA ariel

the top of My bumper bracket has a piece of steel welded to it so the bumper brackets don't flex...
I knew My Bumper wouldn't be too good unless I added a piece of steel under the top of the bumper..

I really need lights that shine on both sides of the road
as thats where the critters are...
just before they bounce out onto the road...

I had amber foglamps on a Magna I had and I left them on all the time at night...
they were shining down low and onto both sides of the road...

as when You dip the lights.... thats the scarey part as then you can't see the critters....

I might do that with some amber foglamps under the bumper on the beetle...
