Hi all. I'm trying to convince my fiancee (a newly licenced driver) to get a VW. She doesn't like driving my 75 bay, but I was hoping to convince her to get a Type 3 (well, for me to get a Type 3 to play with, really).
Did they make automatic Type 3's? And if they did, have any of the gearboxed survived?
If they did, I can probably convince her to get one.
:kiss
hi, yes you can assure her that there are actuallly type 3 automatics.... very rare and hard to get me thinks..
my housemate has one... but he just sold it unfortunately. its a baby poo brown fastback. the guy who bought it (and is yet to pay for it.... possible window of opportunity for you) lives down south and wants it for his trike. the transmission i mean. then going to get rid of the rest of it. i think this may be the fate of all type 3 autos....destined to become part of the grey-nomad trike obession.
you could always get her a semi auot beetle? or (as unpopular as they are) a nice passat or golf in auto? ive had 2 auto golfs and an auto passat....and they were fantatic, kept on keeping on no matter how badly i treated them. there are a couple of really nice passats doing the rounds at vw shows in qld ------- ppl seem to frown on them cause they are water cooled, but really i rekon they are great little cars.
good luck in convincing her......!!! you could always try teaching her to drive a manual... i only had an auto license for a few years (hence the golfs and passats) cause manuals were just too daunting for me......but i finally got the guts up .... maybe invest in some lessons for her?
good luck!
.
Yes they did make the type 3 with a 3 speed auto, they are around if you look. Do a search on here you'll find some good examples.

I got one very good condition sitting in my shed, has a new rebuilt 1916cc with twin 40 IDF's, is a notch, just have to finish a little body repair and touch up painting then i'm selling her. I don't have time for it any more, as i gotta get my 66 project finished, here's a pic. Cheers Damo.
This is my Volkswagen, there are many like it, but this one is mine. Without me my Volkswagen is useless, without my Volkswagen, I am useless.

Thanks for the info - I love the notch from Brissie, but its a long trip up from (or back to) Melbourne! I'll be looking into it over the next month or two.
I learnt to drive in 2 bugs, so I'd love another one. But, really, I'm a fan of buses, so there is more chance of me getting one or two more of those 😵💫

They might be rare, but I don't think they're all that saught-after. We just threw out a '70 auto notch because no-one wanted it (Melb). Pity.

Daughter owns a 73 Fastie, she only has a auto licence, so sold her ours. Absolutely loves the car to bits and loves all the space it has with the two boots for the shopping.
