I fitted an old split case box onto my oval foorpan because I want put the body on it and chuck it in storage.

The gearbox turns over fine until I bolt up the bearing retainer. As soon as I do up those bolts I can only turn the driveshaft approx 45 degrees before there is a clunk inside the box. What is happening here?

I put a brake drum on without the backing plate and retainer and it all turned freely, but the bearing dropped out.

porbobly not your problem but just changed an axle in my baja and when i put it in the first time the fulcrum plates slid to the back of the diff side holding the axle out against the retainer washer thingy which meant that the axle wouldnt turn unless is was horizontal.

also there is gasgets in the side plate which act as shims to space the axle correctly are these correct?

when u put the axle into the slot u need to have the 2 fulcrum plates sitting 1 either side of where the axle slots into.

u need to put the axle in very carefully. easier if u have 2 people and then pivot the axle side to side to check that the fulcrum plates are sitting against the axle and pivoting properly with it.

once u have done that u need to put int the big flat washer retainer thing and then the circlip.

this is not enough to hold the axle in properly though u still need to apply light pressure to it as u slide the axle tube back over it and bolt it up etc. once again easier with 2 people.

it is the shims and the bearing held against the tube with the axle nut which sets the axle in its correct location.

to get the fulcrum plates back where they should be you will have to undo the circlip and take the axle out and do it again.

took my mate and i about 3 goes to get it right.

argh. this is all too much stuffing around to put wheels on a car. Might just bolt some castors on to the frame horns.

The box I used still had the axle attached. Only the 1 side plate and the tube was removed. I thought it would be a simple job of putting it back on!
