Apologies if this has been done before.

People here who are using VoIP -
* What carriers have you used and are you happy with the savingings compared to service?
* Can you suggest a carrier?

We spent $400 on the phone last month. Investigating cheaper methods of communicating and of course VoIP is one of those.

I was chatting with a mate who rang me on his home phone to my mobile, I was at home and offered my home number to cheapen his call as we were going to be 30 to 40 minutes, he said it didn't really matter as he was using VoIP.

These are the recommended top four Australian carriers according to Cnet.

I use netspace for my ADSL and Engin for my VOIP. Spoke to a mobile for around 20-30 mins the other week and it was (from memory) less than $5.00.
The best bit is that for me, my VOIP telephone number is a Brisbane one so Bris folk can call me for a local call and I can call them for $0.10.
My telephone bill is less than $20/month (Including the Engin charge) , line rental is cheapo plan - $29/month (I think), and $45/month for internet.

Thanks Guys for you input - The prices you guys are paying are by far better than what we have just heaved out, an I dodn't add on line rentals and connection costs for the net. Just outgoing.

Engin ... got the VOIP box MIB off eGay for $60.00, a Cisco, so I can just plug the box into the router, plug a wireless phone into the box and no one can tell it's not a real one. Slashes the cost, I'm using cable...next time I move house, wont bother with a land line, cable and VOIP.

Just got last months phone bill.... what a whopper!! all of $31.00 🙂 and that was with 1hr+ of calls to mobiles and the engin charge!
So if you are just looking at outgoing costs, go for it. Make sure though that your modem allows you to play with quality of service - that way you can put phone line first, then downloads, then file sharing etc in priority order - stops warbling calls etc.

I am now in dispute with engin over billing; they have tried to post-facto change the conditions of contract. This is not the first time that I have found their business practices 'unusual' and 'creative'.
